As I figure out what this little business of mine looks like and what my future as a creative, artist, maker, and small business, looks like, the one constant, driving force is that I love to sew. I’ve dabbled in a lot of things, and spent many hours working on a variety of skills, but I’ve always loved sewing.
I remember during the one summer I was a counselor a residential camp counselor and I only had 24 hours off each week, I would drive home to see my family, and I would sew. I was sitting in my parents’ dining room working on a dress when my dad came in and asked why I didn’t just relax when I came home, and I told him that this was relaxing for me. This was how I wanted to spend my time recharging to be excited again on Sunday afternoon for 12 new preteens that would be my responsibility for the next week.
I’m still figuring out a lot of things in this process, but what I’m certain won’t change is that I love what I am making and I am so excited to share that.
One of the things I love the most about sewing these pieces is that each moment I spent working on the piece is recorded in the stitches. You can see the care and thought right on the front of the piece. I love sewing clothes and all sorts of other things, but in those pieces, the work is hidden from view. Here you can see every stitch, every moment, and every thought. It’s all been recorded right there for you in my own hand.
Don’t forget, I have just a few spots open right for a handful of custom pieces, so if you want a piece of your own that was sewn with love and completed with a little happy dance, head over to the link in my profile!
Today I had a print session, listened to podcasts, sketched some new designs, hashed out some business planning, and ended my productive day without a photo to share. Somewhere along the way I was told that being more comfortable in my skin was associated with age: the older I get, the more confident I’ll feel. I don’t think that’s true, at least not for me. I remember in my mid to late 20’s, I felt so in tune. I had moxie, swagger and a twinge of sweet sass. I was single, independent, and for the most part, lived life on my terms. But I also had no one to see into my vulnerabilities, or challenge dormant insecurities, there was no deep intimacy shared, friends could only see so much. It was easier. Fast forward some years later, I was a single mom with a baby and a complex story. I went flat broke overnight, could have easily faced the reality of life in a women’s shelter and I had to draw on resources anywhere I could apply for them. I didn’t feel so confident anymore. And it took a long while before I gained my strength & stride again, and this time it was different, and I’d say for the better. How I saw and related to the world changed. The experience humbled me. Change does that. Even if it’s a welcome and happy change. It ushers in the unfamiliar and suddenly our ducks are not in their neatly planned rows anymore. It can feel like our self-confidence and esteem recede backwards. But I don’t think that’s the case. Flux doesn’t mean lack, it means process and growth and metamorphosis to come. Shedding old skin is highly uncomfortable and at times unpleasant even if the new one to be gained is infinitely better. It’s messy and awkward. Add the idiosyncratic issues we’re all working through, and thoughts of “what is wrong with me?” chime in and being hard on one’s self comes easy. I know this all too well. And you know what? It’s okay. We’re okay. In time there is a horizon waiting with a new dawn, and it ties all of it, the storm and the sun, together for the better and the good.
What brings you joy this time of year?
For me it’s time with family, shopping for and creating gifts, baking and listening to Christmas music.
This “Joyful” dolman is my favorite product in my holiday line! It’s so soft and has a very cute cut.
It comes in red, green and charcoal gray.

I’m in yet another season at work that does not allow much leisurely crochet time beyond a few rows of this project each evening.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but this @unionfibre silk merino is simply the dreamiest yarn 😍 I keep telling myself that I need to complete this project before ordering more.
What’s your favorite part of making a quilt? 🤷🏽♀️
Mine might surprise you, you know, because I’m a rule breaker and everything. 😏 My favorite part is getting the quilt dirty for the first time. 😂 first time on the ground, first crumbs, that first slosh of coffee. (I know, I hear some of you in the back gasping in horror) Why is that my favorite, though? Because then that quilt is FREE. Free to be loved and squished and covered in cat hair and crumbs. Free to be a quilt. It’s kind of like the Velveteen Rabbit, you know? Love the life into it. ❤️
Oh, and you too, babe— embrace the spilled coffee, and the crumbs, and the bed head. Set yourself free from perfection and making it through the to do list and love the life into the people, experiences, and quilts around you this week. Carpe that Diem, baby! 😂💃🏽
So— what IS your favorite part of making a quilt? 😆
(Quilt shown is Lanterns of Hope— pattern available in my shop)
