while we’re at it, how about “don’t judge a disability”? full stop.

there are so many different types of disabilities and many of them are not readily visible or not visible in the ways that ableism teaches us to recognize disability. ✨

Thank you everyone for donating books to Shani's class library!
In the past few weeks we received more books than I could fit into this picture - so THANK YOU!!! 💛💛💛 Today is Shani's birthday, so I kindly remind everyone that they still accepting donations. Link in my bio °°°°°°
Classroom libraries are a great way for students to read more diverse book, and Shani is gathering to include more young adult books covering topics such as disability, race, animal liberation, neurodiversity, feminism, ect.

Yesterday without compression stockings (waist high) on the left. Today with compression stockings on the right. The difference is subtle but there. My brain is so full of blood that I almost feel a bit headachy.
I also got these concert earplugs that reduce noise by 18dB without muffling or distortion. Holy crap do they work well! I should be able to use them in lectures and even Clinic without negatively impacting my ability to hear and understand my professors. 😁

Don’t be Justin folks.
A real #Communist does not engage in #ableism, #sexism, or #racism. #CPUSA is a bad joke. They seemingly only exist because they have to. That’s about as far as “Revolutionary” they are.

More importantly though Justin is a shitflood of reactionary bullshit and Party Badge Wearing.

He is no fucking Communist and on the battlefield I’d shoot him before we engaged the enemy.

It’s not just students. My last year teaching (in Ontario) they started offering financial rewards to teachers who didn’t use their sick days. It’s not enough that I teach in intractable pain, but I have to watch my able bodied colleagues get extra pay for being able bodied. #ableism #thehiddencurriculum #whyileftteaching #theproblemwithteaching #privilegeineducation
I am constantly growing and learning to accept and love my ever changing body. After some pretty nasty comments about needing a wheelchair part time I decided I wasn’t going to post about it anymore. I even stayed home instead of going out and doing fun things so I wouldn’t have to use it but then we had our Colorado trip and I decided that I wasn’t going to allow ableism to dictate my life and miss out on doing things with my friends. In this picture we went to the REI flagship which had 4 stories! I found the tiniest cast iron skillet and thought it was so cute and asked Tom to take a picture of me with it but told him DONT GET MY WHEELCHAIR IN IT! Looking at this picture I can tell how stressed I was about being judged. I don’t want my smile to ever fade from my face and that meant working through these emotions and learning to be confident when I need to use my wheelchair. I am glad I have been able to work through this and hopefully by sharing my experience people will be more accepting and less judgmental.

Imagine life at this height: Eye level with a bike seat. Eye contact with no one. Rolling.

Grateful for all that disability is teaching me. Irritated AF about ableism. I am disabled and I am also a human. How can I make this different?! -

Three points of gratitude:
1. A traveling companion who allowed me to dictate how and when I needed help.
2. Noticing that I care A LOT less about making other people comfortable. (YES.)
3. An absolutely beautiful day full of hope. -

Three points of challenge:
1. Bathrooms. The handicapped stall is in use. I leave my wheelchair outside of my non-disabled stall. (because it is currently a thing that I can do...) I wash my hands and make eye contact with the woman who was in the stall and walks out of the restroom without holding the door for me or saying a word.
2. The odd experience of invisibility and simultaneous vulnerability navigating life at waist height.
3. The promised “wheel in shower,” that was actually a normal tub. (Didn’t use it...) -
Sharing as I go. ♿️

Self unaware anti-Black Americans are liars who even lie to themselves. No one will take from original Black creative expression & simultaneously trivialize major concerns in this community such as discrimination against people who live with disabilities. That discrimination, which the public figure's content consists of lyrically & aesthetically, affects Black people at a completely different intensity level than other backgrounds. The public figure will not stick around for the music & participate in why the group of people who created those very sounds are being targeted with genocide, or any of genocide's less physical variations. #bloodmoney #deborahdanner #harleyquinn #fetishizationofmentalillness #genocide #blackdisabledlivesmatter #charleenalyles #ableism #ableismkills #mentalhealthstigma #michellewilliams #counterculture #indiemusic #alternativemusic #visualart #culturaltheft

Here’s your daily reminder that DISABILITY/CHRONIC ILLNESS DOES NOT ALWAYS LOOK LIKE WHEELCHAIRS AND DESPAIR! Many disabled folks have fluctuating levels of mobility and illness - like me - and can go from one moment being able to skateboard and walk around the city to the next needing their wheelchair etc or being fully bedbound/hospitalised. I’m still on all my treatments including 3 hourly morphine (plus weed which has made a massive improvement in my pain FYI) and I still have bad days, I just talk about them less now. But I’m also pushing my limits in a way I never did before.
Two days ago I did something even I never thought I’d be able to do again - bought this skateboard. In reality I’m actually using it BECAUSE of my disability, now that I live in and need to get around the city, because for me I can use less energy and feel less pain by pushing a board with one leg a few times and coasting vs walking at my pretty slow pace everywhere. I’m lucky that through yoga and my childhood years of skating and dance I still somehow have relatively good balance miraculously, and I know how to fall well BUT I also am just at a place in my life now where I’m willing to risk the injury from falling for some fun, for ease of getting around, and for some good days skating.
I keep saying that I’ve “hit fuck it” which to me means I just don’t care anymore if I get hurt or even die young (which I likely will) as long as I do so whilst doing something that I love and brings me joy and whilst being brave. I’d rather live a short good life than a slightly longer isolated and painful one.
Speaking of pain, my spine hurt more again and kept me up last night more than it has in the past three months but I honestly don’t mind because at least it’s hurting from actually DOING something. I hurt 24/7 either way - might as well make it worth something 🤙🏻 #cripplepunk #ehlersdanlossyndrome #altgirl #skate #santacruz #cruiserboard #cruiser #vans #badmonday #poppunk #poppunkkids #altgirl #androgynous #queer #lgbtq #cardiff #emokid #inked #inkedgirls #inkedup #snapback #greenhair #skater #ableism #girlswithtattoos

As a special educator, I’ve been more than a little shocked at how little ppl who say they are all about social justice listen to/build relationships with/validate the experiences of/support individuals who have disabilities. But if your “social justice” doesn’t actively and fully include ppl who experience disability, I don’t want it. And if you’re typically abled and on insta talking about plastic straws, I better see you out there shoveling your sidewalks during the winter to keep them accessible/calling the city when you see flooded curb cuts/volunteering in a SPED classroom/etc...just sayin’.

My activism will be intersectional or it will be bullshit ✨ When news came out of companies adopting a #strawban, my first reaction was positive - what a great win for #PlasticFreeJuly, right? 🌍 Well... maybe not. It turns out that not only is banning straws is not the biggest win for the environment - it hurts disabled people.
.
As an able bodied person, I hadn't considered the fact that many people need access to bendy plastic straws because of muscle weakness and other issues related to their medical issues. I'm still all for switching to #plasticfree alternatives and avoiding #singleuse plastics as much as possible in my personal life, but this brings me to an important issue - while changes in our personal lives are great, if we want to make a change we need to get involved in governmental initiatives 🏛 The energy and movement behind the straw ban is exciting - but like any movement, if it's not intersectional, it might not be all good. Let's use that energy to make environmental initiatives that are effective, inclusive, and accesible!

To learn more from people who are thinking about these issues, check out @becky.outside and @woke_n_wasteless 🙌🏽 . 📸: @brittandbone | #environmentaljustice  #disabilityjustice  #ableism  #activism  #intersectionality  #latinx  #ootd  #fablatinos  #latinastyle  #vintage  #vintagestyle  #vintageinspired  #modernvintage  #lazypinup  #thriftedfashion  #slowfashion  #secondhandstyle  #secondhandfirst  #slowfashionsummer
I feel we're all pretty clear on the need to use reusable straws rather than single use plastic straws. There are so many photos and videos out there about the damage single use straws do. So I'm NOT going to talk about that, instead I'm going to talk about ableism and why we shouldn't ban single use straws. Millions of people with disabilities need straws to drink for reasons including muscle weakness or paralysis, swallowing problems or involuntary movements. Some of these people who use straws also can't use the current reusable straws for a variety of reasons. Metal straws heat up when used in hot drinks, single use paper straws fall apart easily (especially in hot drinks), pasta straws have the same problem. Many people with these disabilities need a straw that can bend, but alot of reusable straws are stiff, such as bamboo, metal, glass and plastic, and could also cause injury to people with involuntary movements. Reusable straws can also be hard for some people to clean, trying to get the straw cleaner into the straw would not be easy for people with poor hand eye coordination or again for people with involuntary movements. While some reusable straws are dishwasher safe, not all are and not everyone has a dishwasher. Currently silicone straws are the best alternative for people who need them, but they are not the perfect solution in all cases.
On conclusion, if you don't need a straw because of a disability, or can use a particular reusable straw without problems with any disability you may have, than please swap to a reusable straw to reduce waste of single use plastic. But a ban is not the answer, as we shouldn't be taking them away from the people who need them. Do your bit to reduce plastic, but make sure that you are not contributing to ableism in the process. Use your reusable straw if you can, and put your focus on bigger plastic problem items such as plastic bags, takeaway coffee cups and the fashion industry!

Day 2 with #effyouryogastandards with @meganfebuary
My hypermobile elbows were an obstacle to handstands, but getting a yoga chair made it a possibilities. As you can see, my take off isn't as smooth as I would like it to be, while still curving my back. Also, I decided to do this without the wall today so you can see a side angle of the process & to see how I do without the wall. The wall does greatly help with alignment & muscle memory. 💙
Hypothyroidism isn't talked about all that much in the spoonie community, or at least not that I have been aware of. Having hypothyroidism means that your thyroid isn't producing enough thyroid hormones, so the main result is low energy levels. As if not producing enough energy isn't tiring enough, it is also linked with chronic fatigue, so you can be even more lethargic than normal. Before getting diagnosed, I spent literally all day sleeping and could only be awake for no more than a few hours at a time. Today, I still suffer from chronic fatigue, but no where near to the extent that I used to. When I have one of those days where I'm too tired to do anything, like today, inversions really help. This yoga chair helps me help my body in 1 minute. Inversions are great yoga poses for the thyroid and helps it heal.💙
Yet hypothyroidism isn't just about being tired. The metabolism turns to catabolism. The thyroid affects the entire body. From mood changes, to loss of concentration and memory, to hair loss, to muscle & joint weakness. There is this stigma that if you have any type of illness, that you brought it on yourself, or that it was avoidable if you did "this" or "that". While I share my journey & what helps me, it is important to understand that if you are chronically ill, you did not do this to yourself. Illness can hit any of us. You did not chose to be sick, or deserve it. You are doing the best you can, and perhaps a bit too much. You can't be lazy, when it feels like you are running a marathon. 💙

@asda recently refused access to a disabled person because they had an assistance dog. The staff member was very rude & aggressive, & refused to listen as the handler tried to explain the law. When contacted further Asda responded with the statement "we do have the right to refuse anyone for any reason" - this is incredibly ableist & obviously incorrect: it is AGAINST THE LAW for businesses to deny someone access with/because of an assistance dog!! 😡 I'm extremely disappointed in them; there is absolutely no excuse for them to treat a customer with so little respect and, obviously, to ignore/disregard the law.

@assistancedogluna was recently harassed whilst at @Asda, due to the fact a security guard was saying their #assistancedog was not allowed in store. The handler tried to educate the security guard on the law, but he was not having it. I emailed Asda yesterday saying I was hugely disappointed with their behaviour & that they didn't know the law in regards to ADs, & could they please review them to stop further incidents. The response I got (1st slide) seemed to me that they thought they could legally refuse entry to a customer because they have an assistance dog. I found the reply in general lacking in empathy & making no referral to their policy with assistance dogs. I'm hugely disappointed & will not be shopping at Asda anymore. 2nd & 3rd slides was me responding to their message. On the contrary when I contacted @tescofood due to myself having a similar (although not as traumatic) access issue about a year ago, Tesco were wonderful - they apologised profusely & said all staff at the store would get training in regards to ADs and the law. Take note, Asda...

I was helping a friend get from her car to her wheelchair. However, we had to wait until this FedEx driver was done with his deliveries and removed the truck from the striped part of the handicapped space to have enough room. When we tried to point out his mistake in parking there, he argued that she was parked in the handicapped space, and he in the loading area and was very rude to my friend. ALL OF THE BLUE MARKINGS ARE PART OF THE HANDICAPPED PARKING. We have complained to the store he visited and to FedEx, but please be aware that these extensions are important parts of the handicapped parking area.

No outfit is complete without some accessories. They are doing an MRI of my hips and spine. They are going to give me some IV morphine and a steroid injection into my SI joints. I have had to self advocate quite a lot this visit to get my symptoms and pain taken seriously. I cannot physically get up due to the pain yet the doctors keep trying to force me to do it. Doctors need to trust patients when they say they are in pain. Patients know their bodies the best. It is a huge disservice to deny this fact.

Thanks to some of the lovely and truly amazing disabled activists I follow (@disableddybbuk and, @rvbyallegra and @firesideswiththunder to name a few) I have had the opportunity to learn more about ableism directly from those most affected by it. Had I not been privy to this excellent learning experience I most likely would not have been able to see past the veil of my own privilege and understood how this seemingly good action is at its core deeply problematic for a number of reasons.
1) First and foremost, this is ignoring the fact that for many disabled folks, plastic straws are the only safe and effective way for them to drink. Banning plastic straws effectively keeps them from accessing goods and services that abled folks take for granted. It's ableist and shitty.

2) It is a stopgap measure meant to pacify people rightfully angry with large corporations ( like Starbucks) for destroying the environment at the expense of a marginalized group. In reality, plastic straws are nothing compared to the devastation wrought by deforestation and the dumping of chemicals and the depletion of the ozone layer. It puts the onus for reducing environmental impact on the individual consumer rather than the huge corporations (which is where it belongs). Plus, the strawless lids actually use MORE plastic.

3) If you, like myself, are an able bodied consumer who is concerned about the environment and the rights of disabled folks, then you as an abled person can make the choice to not use plastic straws. I have switched to reusable metal straws because it's an option I can take without infringing on the rights of disabled folks.
As a final note, I am able bodied. I try to always do right by disabled folks, but I am not an authority. It's not my place. To learn more about how to use your able bodied privilege to empower disabled folks, the best advice I can give is to listen to them. #ableism #starbucks #strawban

On Thursdays, we’re going to talk about thought - shifts in thinking, thought patterns, and ways to reframe our thoughts.
The discussions around the plastic straw ban over the past few weeks have been an important real-life lesson in what happens when certain groups aren’t consulted or considered in the decision-making process. Single-use plastic straws are a necessity for people with certain disabilities and an all-out ban would be harmful (swipe to view a chart outlining the issues with reusable straws).
The next time your team is making a decision that will affect others, take a moment to consider who isn’t at the table to advocate for themselves. .
