Big Spring High School, Coalwood, #mcdowell county, #westvirgina
The school was build in 1931 and owned by a coal company until 1986 when ownership transferred to the school district. It closed in 2010. In 2015 the school was consumed by a fire.
Homer Hickman was a student here. In 1957 he stood in his backyard and watched the Russian satellite Sputnik in the night sky. The experience had a lasting effect on him.
He and his friends began experimenting with building rockets. Turning negative into positive they used abandoned rail road tracks to manufacture the rockets. They attended the national science fair and won gold and silver in the area of propulsion. Part of the fuel the used was made with local moonshine.
After retiring from NASA Homer wrote a book about that year so long ago that changed his life, he called it “The Rocket Boys of McDowell. It was later made into the movie.
