We knew last year when we featured @marjanibeautyco in our Spring 2017 issue, this was a beauty and brand that truly inspired! Besties Amaya Smith and Kimberly Smith formed the Brown Beauty Co-Op in Washington D.C. Dupont Circle, a new brick-and-mortar beauty store and incubator focused on serving all women of color. After just seven months of planning, the 1,090 square-foot storefront opened and is also available to host events and serving as an incubator. How dope 👏🏽!!

Repost @nerdabouttown ♥️
One of the main critiques about the body positivity movement is that a lot of us simply ‘use it as an excuse to show off our bodies online’. Now while that may be true for some that have co-opted the movement, the same can’t be said for all of us.
For me, I see wearing underwear/bikinis in public almost as a radical act of self love; almost like me conquering the *Final Boss* level of my insecurities. It’s having to face looking at myself in a way that I never thought I would be able to. Something that really helped me on my journey to self love was seeing other fat women (especially black and POC women) in various states of undress online. It empowered me, and made me feel...normal. Seeing other women in their bikinis and underwear with their rolls, cellulite, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and bellies on show normalised fat bodies for me and taught me not to feel ashamed in my own skin. I saw these beautiful, gorgeous bodies and saw myself.
I am often asked how I practise self-care and build up my confidence on my low days and my answer is always the same: buying new pieces of lingerie, or chilling around the house/taking photos of yourself in lingerie. It may come across as shallow, but looking in the mirror and seeing parts of your body that you were taught to hate in all its gorgeous glory, adorned with pretty fabrics is hella powerful. I just came across these photos again after trying to find some others and my first thought was ‘damn; my skin sure does love white’. I wasn’t thinking about my stretch marks on display, or my belly, or my hyperpigmentation - instead I see someone with soft, plump skin that works well for cuddles, great cleavage and a confident stance. The thing I love most about my body is its resilience and responsiveness to whatever I’m doing or want it to do. I’ve put my body through a lot of verbal and physical abuse and it’s always bounced back strong as ever, and I’m so grateful for that.
Self-love shouldn’t be compartmentalised; learning to love every single inch of your body - rolls and all - is a beautiful, healing experience. SO I’MA KEEP POSTING THESE THIRST TRAPS.

PSA: I’m not a ‘Vitiligo Sufferer.’ I’m not a ‘Vitiligo model.’ I am Winnie. I am a model. And i happen to have Vitiligo. Stop putting these titles on me or anyone else. I AM NOT SUFFERING! If anything I’m SUCCEEDING at showing people that their differences don’t make them WHO they are! The only thing I’m Suffering from are your headlines and the closed minds of humans who have one beauty standard locked into their minds when there are multiple standards of beauty!" @winnieharlow
“In being absolutely present, everything falls away. Time becomes irrelevant, you no longer notice the details of the room you’re in – you’re just absolutely immersed.” @lefawnhawk Pictured: Polymath; self-portrait. Link in our profile.
For some people, winter is filled with holiday parties, basking in holiday cheer, and making new memories over holidays with family and friends. But, for others it can be filled with sad thoughts, feelings of hopelessness, and a lack of motivation to go anywhere. If this is you around this time every year, you should do some research on SAD. This disorder starts around the fall into the winter months (because of less sunlight) and in most cases, seems to fizzle out when the warmer weather appears. Some of the symptoms can include depression, fatigue, and social withdrawal.

There is a beauty in the quietness. When the body is still and the silence speaks softly to the soul. It reminds us of our true purpose. That we weren’t made to live for the things of this world. No, they will never satisfy but instead leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled. The stillness reminds us that we’ve been intricately woven to go deep and recognize that our lives were not an accident nor a coincidence. No, the lives we own were designed to leave a legacy that inspires, empowers, to be bringers of light to darks shadows, to expose truth when lies seem to surface, to break down barricades that hold us captive. No, these lives were made to paint a picture of hope and reveal to the world that the Great Designer Indeed Fashioned us to be Fearlessly Impactful for His Good and Perfect Purposes. Oh how He speaks to us in the quiet places. - From the Editor Deisy Mendoza
Many of you may not know that one of my first callings was to write poetry. I used to right pages upon pages. Little did I know that those moments of inspiration were drawn out because He was calling to my heart. Calling me to step into His presence. Inviting me to be part of His journey. What a joy it is to serve a God who sees our innermost talents. Who calls them and awakens them after years and years of allowing them to sit dormant. Is their a talent you haven’t exercised in some time? If so, don’t be afraid. There is a reason He is calling it out of you once again.
Smoking for Women’s Health > Wrinkles: smoking causes collagen and elastin in your skin to break down prematurely, leaving it to look older and wrinkles > Thin hair: chemicals in smoke damage hair follicles > Bad gum and breath: smoking causes gum disease. It affects the flow of saliva and causes dry mouth which in turn traps bacteria and leads to bad breath > Dark circles: smoking dehydrates the skin which causes dark circles and permanent discolouration of the lips
