It's not the fanciest finisher medal but it sure represents the area we ran through at the #wilsoncreekfrozen50k this weekend. It's been 3 years since this race was last put on after the range fire in 2016 and heavy snows of 2017. The weather was perfect and so was the race...great RDs, great volunteers, great track. #medalmonday#gotailwind#silencetheenemywithin#BTFD
Still processing the lessons learned from my first trail ultra-marathon.
I’m prone to be pretty hard on myself, so I’m struggling not to be disappointed that my finishing time was more than 90 minutes off my goal.
I have to admit that this feeling is rooted in arrogance. A humbler Jaren would have stayed focused on the course instead of chasing down and passing so many runners in the middle of the race—because pushing too hard resulted in getting sick, vomiting, lying down for twenty minutes, and walking for four miles before I could start running again.
During that time, all the runners I passed overtook me, along with about ten additional runners.
Such a silly mistake!
I want to be honest about it, though, so I can avoid it in the future.
I know every race will be a learning experience—some more painful than others!
I’m looking forward to getting started on the next training block after another few days of rest.
I feel like I’ve been in a car crash!
Long story short: let it all go and just keep breathing.
Thanks to everyone who wished us luck on our race today.
It was a beautiful run in the Owyhee Range.
All three of us experienced significant difficulties at different points and wondered if we’d be able to complete the distance.
At one point I was alternating between vomiting and crawling in the mud. Quite the introduction to trail racing!
But we fought through the hard moments and finished the race.
I’m very proud of the effort. Thanks for running with me, @booklungs and @shae_griff. You two are so tough—I’m continually amazed.

This morning I pushed my boundaries. I ran the 20.5 mile race at the Wilson Creek Frozen 50k and honestly wasn't sure I was going to make it. I pushed to the limit and accomplished the longest race of my life which included 4900' of elevation and extremely slippery, muddy conditions. A little over 5 hours to finish, but my cramping legs finished, running, across the finish line. It was a beautiful high desert course. We started down in whiteout fog, the #inversion over the valley, and climbed and climbed and climbed...but the prize, the #sunrise from the #Owyhees , was incredible.
