Those you who are unfamiliar, Mead is essentially an alcoholic drink created by fermenting water and honey. While you can simply ferment honey, I often add various herbs or fruit to impart various flavours, medicinal and/or further inebriating effects. For me, mead has been an incredible way to additionally incorporate a diverse array of phytochemicals and phytonutrients into my diet. Mead is one of many ways to engage with your local environment and a great way to have high quality alcohol.
For this batch I purchased a local honey, and collected wild Elderberries from a subalpine environment relatively close to my home. .
There are a number of species of Elder that grow in the Kootenay region, Sambucus nigra is a European species most often used. The one I used is Sambucus racemosa var. Melanocarpa, a species that seems to be prolific in these parts. Traditional people of this area seem to have used it in a way similar compared to the European species. .
Now becoming quite a popular herbal remedy, its most often valued for its antiviral quality. While Elderberry prevents viral adhesion to cell receptors and increased immune function, this plant has many more virtues. It has the ability to open all the channels, being diaphoretic (opens skin pores), diuretic (increases urination), expectorant (expulsion from the lungs), and at higher doses laxative (facilitates bowel movements). All actions relevant in numerous conditions.
I love those plants that bridge the world of food and medicine and ilos my opinion elderberry is one of those plants. Nourishing, tonifying and blood building. This delicious berry will be quite the treat in the depths of winters.
💚If your heart is telling you to give than never question it. 💚I’ve constantly been practicing getting myself back into that heart chakra. You always have something to give. Never question why you should and do not expect anything in return. Give with your heart and you will feel overwhelmed in happiness and love. Thank you for those of you who gave a little of your time, words and energy with me this weekend. Even with the crazy weather I still felt good vibrations and tons of love. Happy Monday friends!
