As we further venture on the trip we start to visit the more well known memorials. As impressive as the beaches are the monuments that will stand for an eternity empower a form of deep silence in the area. Utah beach beholds an impressive sight of the men who put their lives on the line.

B-25s are pictured flying past Mount Vesuvius in Italy as lava and ash spews from the top of the volcano, March 1944, while Allied forces were battling for supremacy in the skies. (Colourised)
The eruption killed 57 as it destroyed the village of San Sebastiano and San Giorg.
One of the most interesting things about Berlin is that there are many layers of history for a lot of its' most famous sights- take Neue Wache for example:
1) built in 1818 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, ordered by King Frederick William III of Prussia
2)then in 1931 the architect Heinrich Tessenow was commissioned by the Free State of Prussia to redesign the building as a memorial to commemorate those who died in the Great War.
3)After Hitler's rise to power, it was the site of the annual Heldengedenktag celebrations held by the Nazi Party and the Wehrmacht armed forces
4) It was heavily damaged by bombing and artillery during the Battle of Berlin in last months of World War II
5)From 1957 the Communist authorities had the Neue Wache rebuilt and reopened in 1960 as a "Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism" (Mitte being in the Soviet sector of Allied-occupied Berlin)
6)In 1969, the 20th anniversary of the GDR, a glass prism structure with an eternal flame was placed in the centre of the hall. The remains of an Unknown Soldier and of a nameless Nazi concentration camp victim were enshrined in the building. Two soldiers of the Friedrich Engels Guard Regiment served as permanent honor guards, a Guard Mounting ceremony was held every Wednesday and Saturday, becoming a major tourist attraction.
7)After German reunification, the Neue Wache was again rededicated in 1993, as the "Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Dictatorship." The GDR memorial piece was removed and replaced by an enlarged version of Käthe Kollwitz's sculpture Mother with her Dead Son (which is shown in this picture)
Just walking by there today, you would never guess such a building has so many stories to tell!
What's your favourite sight in Berlin, and how many layers of history does it have?
De Havilland Mosquito
British Heavy Fighter/Maritime Fighter
The D.H. Mosquito was introduced as an unarmed, high-performance reconnaissance aircraft, later its purpose was changed to light bomber and hesvy fighter. The plane was designed in late 1930's and the first flight was flown in 1940. The Mosquito was mostly made out of wood due to UK's shortage on aluminum and other light metals in 1940. RAF's pilots often referred the Mosquito as a "Wooden Wonder" or as "Mossie"
The Mosquito was noted light and effective. It used two wing-mounted Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 engines. The crew consisted of two members: pilot and navigator/radar operator. The seats were placed next to each other. In B (bomber) and PR (photo-reconnaissance) models the nose was replaced with a cupola for the bomb aimer or for the camera. In F (fighter) models the nose was closed and held 4x 7.7mm machineguns and a belly-mounted 20mm Hispano cannon. The Mosquito's weapons were more accurate than the other British fighter's. The wing-mounted weapons crossed each other at about 300m, unlike the nose-mounted which were facing straight.
The Mosquito was also used anti-submarine warfare over the Atlantic and the English Channel. They attacked when the the enemy submarines were the most vulnerable foe example leaving of arriving to the docks or when they surfaced. Mosquitoes often attacked in small convoys with bombs, rockets and cannons, rarely torpedoes were used.
The RAF continued to use Mosquitos until late 1950's. In 1950 the Merlin engines were replaced with jet engines before they retired.
Service time: 1941-1959
Engine: 2x Merlin V-12 (variant dependent)
Engine power: 1300kW/1500hp (rough estimates, also variant dependent)
Top speed: 590km/h
Operational range: 1400-2400km
Weaponry: 4x 7.7mm Browning, 1x 20mm Hispano, 1x 57mm Molins, 1x torpedo, bombs for 1100kg
INTERESTING STORY OF HOW BOMBER PLANE CAPTURE U BOAT
In 1941, the submarine U-570 went into service for the German Navy. It was based in Norway and was under the command of Captain-Lieutenant Hans-Joachim Rahmlow. Though an experienced naval officer, this was Rahmlow’s first time to captain a submarine.
On August 23, the B-Dienst intercepted British communications regarding a large group of Allied merchant ships off Iceland. Sixteen U-boats were ordered to sink them all, and the following morning, the U-570 set off to do just that – her very first war patrol.
By August 27, the U-570 had been in rough seas for several days and everyone was suffering from seasickness. Some were so badly ill that they became completely bedridden. Desperate for some respite, Rahmlow ordered the submarine close to the surface, which was against regulations and contrary to his training.
In the clear waters off Allied-occupied Iceland, it was clearly visible from the air. Which was how British Sergeant Leslie “Les” Bathy Mitchell of 269 Squadron spotted it, however, his attempt to throw depth charges failed, as his bomb-racks jammed and wouldn’t release. Furious, he called out the U-boat’s position.
