It’s a moo point!
It’s a moo point!
In the series Ladies and Gentlemen (1975), which depicts New York City drag queens and trans women, Warhol engaged more explicitly with drag and the performance of queer identity than in any other paintings he had made since the 1950s.

Mao, 1972.
:
Warhol chose the image of Mao - then the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party - after reading news coverage of President Richard Nixon’s trip to the People’s Republic of China in February 1972.
:

:
Warhol based his Mao paintings, drawings, lithographs, photocopy prints, and wallpaper on the same image: a painting by Zhang Zhenshi that served as the frontispiece for Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung [known in the West as the “Little Red Book”], which was then thought to be the most widely reproduced artwork in the world.

Superman, 1961.
:
Andy Warhol’s depiction of Superman is based on a drawing by Kurt Schaffenberger from the comic Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane (April 1961).
:
Warhol’s decision to use Superman as a subject may offer a biting commentary on the heroic machismo associated with Abstract Expressionist “action” painting, or a queer reading of the Man of Steel, or both.

A great way to spend a Friday off...hanging out at the #whitneymuseum for #andywarhol.
“Kevin Beasley: A View of a Landscape,” the artist’s first solo-exhibition at a NYC museum is now on view @WhitneyMuseum. The show features his most ambitious work to date, a new installation centered on a cotton gin motor from Maplesville, Alabama in operation from 1940 to 1973. Using the mill to generate sound as if it were a musical instrument, Beasley actively creates a space for visual and aural contemplation. Through the use of soundproofing, customized microphones, and audio hardware, the installation divorces the physical motor from the noises it produces, enabling visitors to experience sight and sound as distinct. The immersive installation serves as a meditation on history, land, race, and labor.
