Four-term Republican Rep. Jeff Denham has lost his seat in CA-10 against Democrat Josh Harder. The district, just 80 miles east of San Francisco, couldn’t be more different from Silicon Valley. It includes places like Turlock, where I reported from back in 2014 (that’s me with the notebook!). It is usually conservative, red country — a big part of California most people don’t know about. Here, I’m speaking to a rancher about the drought happening in the state at the time. 🇺🇸 #throwback#onassignment#journalism#CA10#midterms2018#vote2018#California#Turlock
Friends, being speaker is not a “great honor.” It is a job. #NancyPelosi should get it — at least for the next two years — because she is good at it. In the four years she held the gavel, many scholars of Congress say, she consolidated and wielded the power of that office more effectively than anyone in modern history. Her experience is especially important now because there is so little in the army she would be leading. Only three of the incoming Democratic committee chairmen have ever held that position before. More than half of the incoming Democratic caucus has never been in the majority.
Pelosi’s legislative skill was on display most vividly in the first year of the Obama presidency, when she and her 81-vote majority passed every item on his agenda — most breathtakingly, during the high-wire act that produced the Affordable Care Act.
What may serve her best now is the seasoning she got in two years as speaker under a Republican president, George W. Bush. Her street-wise political instincts, honed from her childhood as the daughter of a Baltimore mayor, helped lay the groundwork for the party’s spectacularly successful performance two years later.
As she heads into 2020 with a small and fragile majority, Pelosi understands, and is equipped to deal with, tensions within her party. She can balance the passions of the hard left, and with the caution needed to protect more moderate members whose election in swing districts put our party back in power.
Nancy has indicated she is not in this for the long haul. She has recently begun describing herself as a “transitional figure,” and spoken longingly of writing books and spending more time with her grandchildren. So lets leave Pelosi alone and replace her deputy's with NEW leaders and groom them for the future!! __________________________________________ #RegistertoVote#BlueWave#vote2018#iwillvote#treason#sdlive#receipts#NeverAgain#maga#true45#georgia#illegitimateTrump#trumprussia#2020#florida#RachelMaddow#speakerpelosi#Nancy#Beto#notmypresident#ThisIsAmerica#lockhimup#resist#donaldtrump#imstillwithher#impeachtrump#BrettKavanaugh#deplorable
I want to give gratitude and light to one of my shero’s, Nikema Williams tonight. She got into some “good trouble” today, and while I know that today must have been one of the hardest days imaginable for her personally, I want her to know that for so many people (perhaps for millions tonight) she is a bright and shining light. And we have her back like she always has ours.
I met Nikema in 2012 through work we both did on the Presidential election. We ended up sharing one of the most phenomenally special days and nights of my life together that year, up in Chicago on Election Day.
We worked together again in 2014 and 2016. She became my State Senator in 2017. She has consistently always picked up the phone if I’ve ever called her for support as a constituent OR a friend. Nikema has always had my back and worked so hard for the greatest good, including over the past week as I’ve turned to her for help ensuring that two people close to me’s votes are really counted in this year’s election. Nikema has been on the front lines, working to preserve the integrity of our Democracy, day in and day out since the day I met her in 2012.
Today she was arrested for peacefully standing with her constituents at the Georgia Capitol as they asked for every vote to be counted. And I am so incredibly proud of her for doing her job as an elected official, and for going above and beyond, as she always does.
These pics aren’t the best in the world. Normally I wouldn’t post them on here. The selfie is from primary election night this year (which we actually spent together at Hamilton, huddled together trying to get our phones to get enough signal to find out the results and celebrating together when we found out Stacey won). The others are from our day and night together in Chicago in 2012.
This isn’t my typical IG post, but tonight I am sending so much light and gratitude to Nikema. She’s not one of my closest friends in the world but she’s one of the people who I treasure the most (and I don’t know that I’ve ever told her that before). Our city, our state and our country are so lucky to have her. Thank you Nikema, for everything. @nikemaforsenate @nikemaw
Check out my previous post about the podcast called "Someone know Something" this is also Mississippi, the same state, the same story today.
from @true.45 - (🎧📺🔊😳LISTEN TO THIS)
In the bleak history of #lynchings in the deep south, Mississippi holds dubious pride of place. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, 654 lynchings of black people were carried out within its borders, dramatically more than any other state. It is within that context that a video posted on social media on Sunday and by Monday morning viewed almost 3m times landed with incendiary impact. It showed the appearance at a campaign stop earlier this month of #CindyHydeSmith , the sitting US senator from Mississippi who is locked in a fight for the seat with a black Democrat, #MikeEspy .
“If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row,” Hyde-Smith is heard saying in the video, praising a local supporter standing beside her.
The senator scrambled to explain herself after the video went viral. She said it was an “exaggerated expression of regard” for the individual who had invited her to speak and “any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous”.
But talk of public hanging is rarely perceived as innocent in #Mississippi , given the state’s sordid legacy. Lee county, where Hyde-Smith spoke at the county seat, Tupelo, was the location of two lynchings according to EJI. Neighboring Monroe county witnessed 14. You can do better than this Mississippi. 😑

Democrats’ blue wave was much larger than early takes suggested | "The narrative that congealed election night before polls had even closed on the West Coast was that while Democrats may have taken the House, they also underperformed relative to expectations and the hoped-for blue wave had turned into, in the words of columnist Nick Kristof at the New York Times, ‘only a blue trickle.’ Like in any election, Democrats both won some squeakers and lost some squeakers. They over-performed expectations in some races and underperformed them in others. And in 2018, it happens to be the case that Democrats got some of their most disappointing results in East Coast states with early closing times, while the GOP’s biggest disappointments came disproportionately in late-counting states. Consequently, what felt to many like a disappointment as of 11 pm Eastern time on election night now looks more and more like a triumph." | Read more from Vox by visiting the link in our bio.
I’m extremely grateful and humbled for the opportunity to continue serving you and the community I love. I love our district!
Thank you Lucinda for your message.
During the past year, I spent much of my efforts reaching out to voters throughout District 1. Communication, sharing ideas and open dialogue are essential to continuing to improve our district. The response was incredibly positive and productive. Thank you!
We’ve gone far in achieving our goals, but we are not done yet. We need your continued engagement and support; we need your vote. We won on Election Day but we still have a runoff. We can’t do this alone. Let’s continue to move El Paso forward! Again, THANK YOU for your continued support and vote!

Today, the DC Council is set to take a first vote on lowering the District’s voting age to 16, the age when your legal relationship begins with the government changes (you can work, pay taxes, drive, and pay fees). But there’s a push to table the bill and not vote. Here’s CM Allen’s argument for why we should lower the age. If you agree, urge your councilmembers to vote no on delay and yes on empowering the next generation. #vote16#vote16dc#votingrights#vote2018

Abrams Campaign Manager, Lauren Groh-Wargo: "Almost a week after Election Day, we find ourselves in the not unfamiliar place of place of having to advocate for the representation and rights of Georgia voters who were not seen or heard in this election — an election overseen by #GAGov candidate and recent Secretary of State Brian Kemp.
So here’s what we know: Georgia voters were confronted at the voting booth by widespread irregularities, which were reported by multiple media outlets. Insufficient machines, long lines, confused poll workers, conflicting and arbitrary guidance that varied widely by county — none of it designed to make voting easy or simple for millions of eligible Georgia voters.
But we’ve come to expect — although not to accept — such activity from Brian Kemp, who is the architect of some of the greatest voter suppression tactics this country has seen in recent years." According to early stats from the US Election Project "Almost half of possible voters actually voted" might not sound impressive. But for a U.S. midterm election, it's a whopping figure. Compare that with just 36.7 percent in 2014, and 41 percent in 2010. #MyAmerica#everyvotecounts#EarnedRight#vote2018
