Meet “Stretch”. The next handful of weeks (hopefully not months) I will be building this awesome van into a livable space. Leaving for Arizona in a couple days to do the build in a warmer environment. Let’s do this!!

Today's post is about Asbestos in old vans. I experienced a potentially dangerous situation while renovating my van and now a follower of mine is currently experiencing the same issue. So apparently in vans older then 1980 Asbestos is found in a glue they used to stick vinyl floor tiles to the ground. So people renovating these vans need to be careful, especially if you have young children running around the reno site. You can pay someone to remove the tiles for you and test the glue, or like me I removed them myself taking the correct precautions, instructed by a asbestos remover himself. He told me to wear an asbestos rated mask, wear a plastic raincoat, and spray the area with soapy water. This helps prevent particles from flying around (I think). And put the tiles in a double plastic bag and take to the dump and tell them it's asbestos and they will tell you how to dispose it. So many people are renovating old vans and would never think of this!! Just like I didn't until someone told me to be careful. When I gutted the van I stood in the middle of a giant dust cloud created by the insulation that had turned to powder under the walls. So fingers crossed this doesn't have an effect on me later in life!! In the picture you can see little glittery things floating around the electrical cable? Well they're the particles from gutting the van I was exposed to before realising it may contain asbestos 😔 BE CAREFUL!! Those particles remained in the air inside the van for about a month even after moving the van to a new location. Nasty stuff, and let me tell you it wasn't fun cleaning it up! It broke two vacuums and I had to end up buying a industrial wet and dry van from Bunnings for $80 which did the job!

How did we get so lucky? An empty space where a permanent airstream usually sits was calling our name. It was like it was waiting for us. Our real estate just doubled and we now have outside dining and a rocker. I feel like we just hit the lotto.
Montana was an amazing state to drive the van through. On this particular day, we drove up the east side of flathead lake, through the national forest. There was snow, fog and really moody scenery. On the other side, driving down 93, it was clear, blue skies and big white clouds. An amazing day, so many changes in scenery, a beautiful region!
Have you ever had a moose encounter? We aren’t going to be hitting the road in the van full time for a little while, but that’s not going to stop us from getting out and seeing what we can in the meantime.
Sure, the traction in the van isn’t great, and the roads will likely get icy in spots, but we made it through Yellowstone recently, which is encouraging.
We even remembered to bring our snowshoes, which was a plus. I actually spotted this moose from quite a ways off and we were able to pull over, strap on our snowshoes, and get closer.
The best part? There ended up being three moose down there. #backpacksandroadmaps
“Only look back to see how far you’ve come...” ✨🗺👉🏼
Here’s one from the archives -
Exactly two years ago today we snapped this photo (1), our first EVER of us and the van that would eventually become our full time home. 🚐🥰 We had just picked it up and were super excited/nervous/nauseous/eager to get started, so we threw a few goodies in the back and took him for a weekend away 👉🏼 (2) Big Red at the start of our journey, in all his humble, ex-post van glory, and (3) Two years, one DIY conversion and tens of thousands of kms travelled later. ❤️🧡
It’s amazing seeing our far we’ve come, both us and the van, and it gives us the warm fuzzies knowing that whatever happens in the future, we really gave this a red-hot go.
I wonder what things will look like in another 2 years?... #turningdreamsintoreality
