Barcelona days have begun muy bien ✨💭 #BarcelonaWithMariam
Living in a culture that is different than one’s own is an exciting adventure and a challenging process; it’s called a cultural adjustment. Moving to another culture I carry my own background and experiences with me, which shape how I perceive and adjust to the new environment.
However, I must admit getting accustomed to the Spanish ways has been relatively easy and familiar to me (for now 👀) And why, you ask? Because I find a resemblance between Spaniards and Armenians, and it really warms my heart 😬⚡️
Family values, social norms and traditions are quite similar to those in Armenia. Also the shops, kiosks and overall ”chill” attitude towards life; enjoying life in the moment. I was so amused to see elderly men playing backgammon in a park- JUST like in Armenia. For these reasons, creating my home away from home has started pretty smoothly 💛 #TravelWithMariam
Happy Thursday peeps! 🙏🏼
I might be smiling but in the inside I’m sad- and, a little heartbroken... ✨
To live so far from my home country and most importantly, my relatives.
It felt hard leaving Armenia. The coutry I feel connected in a very special way. People who understand me wholeheartedly and are on my level in so. many. ways. The atmosphere and the culture that is so different to that back home.
I hope one day I can travel there whenever I want. Who knows, maybe even live there if things settle that way #TravelWithMariam
Until next time, my dearest Armenia. You were great, as always 🇦🇲💛✨
Happy Independence day Armenia! 🇦🇲
I feel extremely lucky to be here today. It’s my first time here on this special day. Yerevan is filled with sunshine, laughter and happy faces; people dancing and singing on the streets - just like it’s supposed to be. I’m going back home to Finland tomorrow but before that, I’ll cheer with the others for the last time 💭 And I couldn’t ask for more. #TravelWithMariam
Happy Friday friends! 💛
Armenian days continuing 🇦🇲... And I’m loving it here! Feels so good to be home, indulge in and get my yearly dose of Armenian culture. While I still have a few more days left I thought to share #fivefunfacts this time of Armenia.
Did you know any of the facts I’ve gathered below?✨ #TravelWithMariam
💭 After tasting freshly baked Armenian bread it’ll be hard to go back to plain packed, store bought bread. But in Armenia fresh-out-of-the-oven bread is considered normal. You’ll be able to buy it from bread shops, restaurants, kiosks and supermarkets... 🍞 Probably one thing that Armenians wouldn’t forget when they sit at the table is 🥖 In 2014 Armenian lavash was included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
💭 Each year, on the Sunday closest to the date of August 15, the Armenian Church conducts The ’Blessing of Grapes’.
Blessing the grape means blessing the harvest and the goods of the whole country. It’s also a tradition for Armenians not to eat grape as long as it is not blessed.
💭 Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, is one of the oldest cities in the world founded in 782 BC by King Argishti I. Yerevan is 29 years older than Rome and this year, actually Yerevan celebrates its 2800 anniversary✨
💭 Mount Ararat is the symbol of Armenia. Noah landed on Mount Ararat on his ark after the waters of the world Flood subsided “And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat” (Genesis 8:4). I still need to get a nice shot of the Ararat... 🌟
💭 ”Never be late for dinner, smoke Havana cigars and drink Armenian brandy” - Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill. It’s believed that Churchill drank one bottle of “Dvin”, a 50-degree bottle of Armenian brandy - a day... 👀 To what he attributed his longevity, Churchill is said to have replied cigars, Armenian brandy and no sports.
I’m in Armenia! 🌟 ...and you’ve probably noticed this through the multiple Insta stories I’ve shared. #TravelWithMariam
My cousin asked how I feel walking the streets in Yerevan- do I feel like a tourist or not. Walking the streets here is not like in any other coutry because the smells and overall atmosphere is SO familiar to me. I’ve been constantly visiting the country once (or twice) a year for ten+ years. I definitely don’t feel like a tourist but rather like someone that blends in and is part of the crowd- minus the huge camera and backpack that I carry which happen to be quite touristy... 🙈✨
Apart from that, what makes this place quite a lot more meaningful is that all my relatives live here ✨ I’m happy I have five more days to spend here before heading to my other home(country).
Is there a country where you feel as I do describing above? 🌟
Do you (love to) go out for breakfast when on vacay? 🌈💦🍉🥑☕️ #TravelWithMariam I just came across this picture from last year’s vacation in Benagil, Portugal. Earth Shop & Cafe had the coziest ambiance and friendliest staff. Located in beautiful Carvoeiro, the breakfast plates were all so nicely assembled. I think the picture speaks for itself: DOESN’T THIS LOOK LIKE THE BEST BREKKIE SPREAD EVER? Not to mention the view... Tag who you’d share brekkie with 😍💯🌟
The heatwave is back and everyone is screaming🍦🍡🤩 #TravelWithMariam
Totally irrelevant to this awesome 🍦 spread (apart from the fruit 🍦’s...) but here’s my 3rd and last fruit RANT; at least for a while 😜
I need to confess one thing that is completely out of scope in Europe... 😵 The one fruit that WILL take your heart, soul and taste buds to a place called HEAVEN keeping your mouth watering and craving for more and more and more... 👅
Wait for it... Armenian APRICOTS! 🍑🍑🍑 Yes, it’s a thing! Apricots were known in Armenia during ancient times and have been cultivated there for so long that it’s often thought to have originated there. Its scientific name ’Prunus armeniaca’ (Armenian plum) derives from that assumption. Although multiple reliable sources (Wikipedia and such... 💁🏻♀️) unveil that apricots are probably cultivated in China for like thousands of years. But you know what? Armenia still has the scientific name #soproudcanyoutell
Long story short - if you couldn’t tell already - this is my honest message to EUROPE: please please PLEASE start selling Armenian apricots. And that concerns you too, Finland!
YES PLEASE GIMME ALL THE 🍦🍦🍦 #TravelWithMariam Happy Monday friends! 🍡 Any fun plans for the week ahead?
I feel like my face is l i t e r a l l y melting. I know I’ll miss this feeling after a few months so better enjoy alllll of it, am I right 😛💭.
Talking about the weather... I have very fond memories looking at this picture from 2017. We had just landed in Faro, Portugal. Before driving to our Airbnb which was in Benagil (💛), we made a quick stop in the city centre and found this suuuper cute picturesque café. THE ONE THING STOPPING US GOING IN was our SWEATY butts; we were (almost 😬) too ashamed to leave the car - that’s how bad the sweat-situation was 😂👐🏼 Never had I ever experienced such 🔥 heat! The saying ’dripping in sweat’ would’ve been an understatement...🤚🏼..
Thought of the day: Life’s definitely not that serious guys 💯 Rock those sweaty cheeks of yours 😌🤲🏻🍑⚡️
Talking about sweaty days... 😨 yes that’s swEAty not swEEty 🤷🏻♀️ ⚡️ #TravelWithMariam
Does the sweaty weather make you reminisce about the colder days or are you a true heat-oholic? 🌝🌚 Finland is on fire once again. We’ve been blessed with good weather and there’s no end to it 🤚🏼. For once I’m actually not dreaming about the Barcelona heat. Although having an ocean view and a couple of 🌴 wouldn’t hurt #sneakyclue#78daystogo
Hope you’ve had/are having an amazing Monday! ✨ #barcelonadays
Fruit stories part ✌🏼 with a picture of our daily platter of lets-have-every-fruit-on-planet-earth 🍑🍉🍓🍊🥝🥥🥑 #TravelWithMariam We definitely indulged in some serious morning fruit sweetness and easily emptied that big tray in a matter of minutes. I actually became a total papaya-freak (as did my mom!!). How had I never had that ripe, sweet and not at all soapy papaya?! I’ve missed the papaya train earlier but happy to say I’m ON BOARD now 😎🙌🏼 Papaya lovers out there? ⚡️
Weeknight and the amount of people everywhere! 👀😱 #barcelonadays#TravelWithMariam
This picture is taken a few weeks ago in Barcelona. It was nighttime and the streets were packed with people buzzing everywhere ⚡️ In fact I kind of felt like ”at home” since it’s a typical scene in Armenia where you’ll find locals wandering the streets basically all. night. long. This is very common in the summertime when the daytime heat is just toooooo hot to handle 🔥 .
People actually stay inside (hallelujah for air conditioning!) to escape the unbearable 40C heat and only at around 10-11 p.m. they literally burst outside as the temperature drops to a more bearable 25-30C. Grown ups together with their children in the middle of the night, walking and enjoying the outdoors 🌛🌟 In Yerevan one may simply go out in the street at night and just walk around; not being afraid of anything. That’s something I r e a l l y enjoy when visiting my hometown Yerevan. The city is definitely safe and peaceful at night for locals and tourists to stroll around.
Fun fact: Armenia is in one of the 10 top countries in which people feel the safest to walk home alone at night (2015 Gallup Law and Order Index) 😉💫 #proudmuch
Do you have an all time favorite fruit? 🍒🍉🍓🥥
Out of all the things I miss about Spain, it must be the fresh, ripe and juicy fruit that bring me the biggest withdrawal 🥝🍋🥑 These fresh juices (LOVED the classic mix of 🥥 and🍍) and fruits can be found at La Boqueria market. The juices were all less than 2€ 😵 I definitely went loco consuming a good 2 kg fruit a day so you must understand my fruit deprivation? Fruit stories to be continued... 👅 #TravelWithMariam
Our vacation is coming to an end (1 more day to go!) and of course we had to visit Brunch & Cake in Barcelona.
We were s o l d 🍭🍡🌸🌿🌟 Brunch & Cake offers all-day meals: vegetarian and healthy dishes, pancakes, açai, smoothies, beetroot & paleo peanut butter lattes, just to name a few.
I love beautifully assembled food and here you’ll definitely see that and so much more. They put A LOT of effort into presentation and the menu is innovative. The portions are big and you’ll definitely get value for your money. The dishes we ordered were all ~10€ which is amazing.
The staff was very friendly and although there was a line that seemed long we got seated in just 20 minutes. I promise you won’t regret waiting the wait 🙏🏼💗🌟 #brunchandcake#TravelWithMariam
Breakfast situation @seasonparis 🥐☕️🍴 #seasonparis#TravelWithMariam
Had to give this Insta-friendly café a visit (ps shoutout and thanks @alexadagmar for the recommendation on your blog 😌). It was super cosy and the breaky’s were both a pleasure for the eyes and tummy 😋👌🏼 •
We’re coming back home today but oh what an amazing minivacay it has been 💛
#Yerevan sunset ✨💫 #throwbackthursday •
Isn’t it odd how people adapt to the environment they live in? I find it even somewhat unbelievable. •
What I wonder too is the choices people make deciding where they live (=if this certainly is something they can decide). If you could choose would you rather live somewhere surrounded by the beautiful nature or in the middle of a concrete jungle? Would you rather live somewhere your heart would feel warm and full than dull and numb? Many ”what if’s” come to the mind, obviously, but I think we need to be more brave when it comes to this not be afraid of the unknown. Especially knowing the surroundings make a huge impact on our wellbeing ✨•
I choose morning walks by the ocean over dark, rainy mornings; what do you choose? 💫 #illtakemymorningcoffeebytheocean#thursdaythoughts#sneakyclue#TravelWithMariam
A little announcement!!! ✨Wanna eat good and healthy food for a great cause?! Keep reading... 😇
