Gajner Palace, Fort and Wildlife Sanctuary, a short drive from Bikaner.
Gajner Palace has been converted into a heritage 5 star hotel. It is surrounded by a fort on one side and a lake on the other. The palace and its extensive grounds are within a forest which is now protected as a Wildlife Sanctuary. A tour of the palace is a must, the beautiful rooms, terraces and gardens overlooking the lake. There are temples and a large courtyard leading to the fort walls and a walk along the lake. There are views of wildlife grazing on the grass around the lake. Leisurely boat rides in the afternoon are a delight. The view of the palace from the lake (on the boat) or from the courtyard, which goes partly around the lake, is extraordinary. The view is charming during the morning and afternoon and then mesmerizing in the dusk and evening. The sunrise from behind the palace and the sunset across from the lake are not to be missed.
Later in the evening the hotel organizes Kalbelia Dance and music from 7:30 till 9:00 PM, for dinner guests, usually groups in buses on their way to Bikaner or staying overnight at the Palace. Kalbelia Dance is famous of Rajasthan performed by the Kalbelia nomadic gypsy tribe known for trading in snake venom. The costumes (all black with red thread embroidery) and movements resemble serpents and is a sensuous dance form. The dancers (women) get the ladies on the dance floor and having experienced the excitement of the quick movement, get tipped heavily. The Kalbelia men play music and sing and do not take the floor.
