I like Steven Soderbergh’s experimentations even if they are not very good simply for the fact that there is still a director out there who is not afraid to try new things even if it means he falls flat time to time (Logan Lucky, the very first review of this account) I like him, because he can make great movies too - Liberace! with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. But sometimes I just stand baffled as to why he would waste his time with a movie which looks and feels like straight out of a film studies course at a community college in High Barnet. Ok, that might be a little harsh, but if you chose to shoot it on an iPhone, yet the result looks like a movie shot on an iPhone rather than Tangerines where the look is justified and you have Claire Foy (brilliant Queen but otherwise slightly overrated) running around a madhouse hoping that someone will believe her that she is not mad… Then you end up with something like the below par Unsane - a forgettable movie not worth the director’s effort. RATING: ⭐️⭐️
I thought my first contribution to my music based Instagram should be me playing a piece by a composer that has truly inspired me. I first watched the film 'American Beauty' when it had just been released. I was flabbergasted by the narrative, but even more amazed by the emotive score Thomas Newman had created for the film. His playing really conjures up the melancholy, dark, yet beautiful tone the film presents to the viewer. This is me performing a truncated version of 'Any Other Name' (that will fit in one minute of an Instagram video) As standard, I'm not playing with sheet music in front of me. I hear a piece, and then play it... #thomasnewman#piano#americanbeauty
Throw back to this time of last year when the legend Thomas Newman visited us in Advanced Orchestration class. It was an honor to meet him in person and watch him run the session. Can't believe it's been a year now. Take me back... #tbt#berklee#thomasnewman#filmscore#bmi
I am sorry about the recent hiatus, I have lots of stuff planned and have been working on a few other music projects on the side to my two main ones, so stay tuned for updates coming soon! Anyways, I am going to try to get back into writing a little piece once a week. For this week, I composed this piece called, In The End. In The End is a story told from the perspective of a dying person who is surrounded by loved ones, reminiscing about good times and making some new memories. Ultimately, the person knows they are about to die and is content with their death and is just happy to be in the presence of loved ones, making the forthcoming seem less scary. Ultimately, the person is happy and ready to go, dying happy. Please let me know what you thought in the comments, I always love hearing what other people got from my pieces, so if you heard something different from what I just described, do tell me what you imagined! Hope you all enjoy! (Link to my soundcloud in my bio) #filmmusic#filmcomposer#composer#orchestra#music#johnwilliams#thomasnewman#eastwestsounds
My Dad has ZERO imagination...zip...zilch...nada. He is quick to tell you that anything Fantasy, Sci-Fi or Horror is “garbage” and that he just doesn’t get it. Oddly enough, he took me to see both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi, and absolutely loved them. Go figure. 🤔😄
Despite how much he loathes the aforementioned genres...more importantly...my Dad loves me, and he knew how much I was dying to see this film. No one else was free to take me, so he reluctantly drove me to our local theater, roughly 25 miles away, so I could see it.
I can still remember that Summer evening in 1987 and how excited I was to see this film. I was twelve years old at the time. My parents had me late in life, which meant Dad was in his mid 40’s, and our age gap has always caused a bit of friction when it came to entertainment choices...so even though I was ecstatic, I knew Dad was most likely gonna hate it.
Dad laughed all the way through the movie, and being a tremendous animal lover, like me, was quite invested in the well being of Michael and Sam’s Siberian Husky, Nanook...and he wasn’t afraid to let me, or the rest of the theater, know about his concern when Nanook was in peril. 😄
Dad and I have never spoken of our trip to the movies that night...and although he might tell you otherwise, I think he genuinely enjoyed “that ol’ junk” we experienced in the theater that evening. As for me, I instantly fell madly in love with the film and it remains one of my favorite films of all time. A fantastic script, perfect casting, brilliant Direction by Joel Schumacher and an absolutely fantastic soundtrack make this a timeless classic that I never tire of. I never dreamed it would one day have such a massive cult following, but it’s easy to see why...and it couldn’t have happened to a better film.
I’m looking forward to my bazillionth viewing of this amazing little film tonight. #lostboys#thelostboys#vampires#vampire#horror#comedy#scary#intense#funny#classic#jasonpatric#coreyhaim#coreyfeldman#kiefersutherland#jamigertz#california#santacarla#nowwatching#bluray#cinephile#filmlover#bluraycollector#soundtrack#thomasnewman
"I saw then that my father's only fear was that his son would follow the same road. And that was the last time I ever held a gun. People always thought I grew up on a farm. And I guess, in a way, I did. But I lived a lifetime before that, in those six weeks on the road in the winter of 1931. When people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man, or if there was just no good in him at all, I always give the same answer. I just tell them... he was my father"
An aspect of film that I really love is the music. Not the soundtrack, the score. Although I really like the self-titled song by #Adele . The music for this movie is done by my favorite composer. A prominent detail about a composer's music that I like is the consistent style, but with Skyfall, I like how Thomas dials it back a bit. Creating music that to me is a natural blending of his style and the previously established #JamesBond music and themes throughout the past decades. This is not a score that is more lenient towards one or the other. A perfect blend. I can a lot of Thomas in the music, from the style to the use of certain instruments
