Artist: Death Grips
Album: The Money Store
I gave this album a 10 cause Anthony Fantano gave it a 10 🤪🤪🤪- no no just kidding. I actually LOVE his album. Its so full of angst and has a unique feel to it. It is unlike any experimental albums I have ever heard before. Definitely recommend.
The Money Store
By: Death Grips
The Money Store is great. It has an amazing tracklist that stays consistent over all 13 tracks.
The record is this dark, crazy, claustrophobic party on an other planet. The group has Andy Morin who mostly produces, Zach Hill on drums and Stefan Burnett previously known as Mxlplx but now known as MC Ride on the vocals. Zach Hill nails the drumming and it really is something else. The first track, Get Got has this eerie but explosive instrumental and has MC Ride somberly rapping over it. Well, more somber than he usually would. The drums aren't so clearly present because the song is mostly has an electronic feel. Next up is a more energetic song called The Fever (Aye Aye). Here the drums are very present and there is a more agressive vocal performance. The next two tracks Lost Boys and Blackjack are this dark slimey, heavy songs that aren't as long but Lost Boys has Ride screaming off the top of his lungs unlike in Blackjack. Hustle Bones has great backvocals and Ride's ecstatic performance is some crazy shit and it is brilliant. The sixth song on the album is I've Seen Footage and it has a more punk feel. At least more than any other track on the album. Song number seven Double Helix is one of the most experimental cuts on the album and it is apsolutely mind bending. System Blower has one of the most simple yet most complex instrumentals on the project. It is made up of drums and guitar and a chopped up synth and it rules. The Cage is a brutal and filthy banger and another one of Ride's outbursts. Punk Weight is great but ironically it has less punk weight than I've Seen Footage. Fuck That is simplistic and the most important part are vocals by MC Ride. Bitch Please is one of the record's highlights with it's amazing explosive bright light instrumental and Hacker is the perfect album closer. It takes every aspect of the record so far and it nails it and perfects the Death Grips song formula.
Overall, this album is apsolutely amazing it is one of my favorites and I would give it a 10/10.
Music Moist out.
Just like The Powers That B, I split this ranking into 2 posts and posted something in between them. Anyways, this might be my most controversial opinion so far, so bear with me. 6. Bottomless Pit. It’s really just their regular sound as usual, but made more catchy and much more accessible. This spawned a whole new wave of Death Grips fans, which is both a good and bad thing. It just lacks the punch and unique-ness of a typical release. Still very memorable and catchy. 5. N***as On The Moon. Disc 1 of The Powers That B. Really unique production, aesthetically different, love the Björk sampling, unique new direction for the group. I just don’t think I would call every single song on here great. I’m sure this opinion will anger some fans of this album. 4. Exmilitary. Really good and memorable, awesome samples, rock infused with hip-hop. Known For It still isn’t a great song. Mixed bag in terms of sticking with one style. 3. Steroids. Technically one song, but multiple songs blended into one unique EP. Their most fast paced and intense release to date, awesome production. 2. The Money Store. Here’s where I get controversial, when this album is widely considered to be their best. Unique, amazing original production, maybe the easiest to listen to, near flawless tracklist. But there’s one album that I think does it better... 1. Jenny Death. Disc 2 of The Powers That B. Every song is great in its own right. They’re at the top of their game. Insanely cohesive tracklist with a mind blowing intro. It’s on par with Steroids in terms raw energy. I rank it number 1 because I think they finally fully realized their sound with this one.
Who’s an artist/group you previously did not like at all but now love?
June 22nd. Year of The Snitch has just been released. For some odd reason, I decide to listen to it despite not being a Death Grips fan at all. I ended up kind of liking it, enjoyable. I go to sleep, being it was 12 A.M. I wake up the next morning and decide to listen to The Money Store, Death Grips most critically acclaimed album. Hell, even Fantano gave it a 10! Surprise, I love the album. It’s so weird and chaotic yet it’s just amazing, MC Ride’s harsh delivery mixed with the crazy drumming from Zach Hill, and Andy Morin’s amazing work on the keyboard come together and make one of the best albums of the decade. I then decide to listen to No Love Deep Web and Bottomless Pit. I love both albums. The covers may be a little intimidating (especially no love deep web) but it’s definitely worth a listen. In 5 days Death Grips went from a band I did not like at all, and wouldn’t even think of them to ever be one of my favorites, to my new favorite group, and by far my most listened to artist/group in the past month, despite not even listening to them for a week yet.
