Yesterday @newleafoutreach set up an unsupported supervised consumption site to honour the 70th anniversary of the @unitednations Declaration of Human Rights. Next to Vancouver’s #DTES , Nanaimo has among the highest rates of #homelessness , #druguse and #addiction compared to anywhere else in #Canada ; and until this past weekend, had the largest #tentcity in the country - please support them & their LIFE SAVING efforts 🌱
#repost @newleafoutreach .
New Leaf Outreach Pop-Up Supervised Consumption Site was a success today! In only a few hours we had over 50 people access our services and utilize the pop-up site. There we ZERO overdoses, everyone was friendly, safe, and respectful of one another.
Many people came to talk with us today, including families with their children who wanted to educate their kids about what was going on and why. The public response to our harm reduction efforts has been amazingly positive so far - We are so blessed to have such an amazing team here @newleafoutreach - Amber @mistressometal , David, Ray, Rochelle @rochele68 , and Sapha @theraveda helped set up and operate the tent during the time we had it up and running! We also had Kevin @nivek.d and Leslie @teenwolf1word come by today too and many other friends and supporters also came to say hello and give their blessings including our good friend Marty @bcnightmare, @vancouver_island_cannabis and Rhonda @rmcleod101 our very own Cannabis educator and nurse Sarah @nurselovegrove stopped by to bring coffee and home baked goods for everyone to enjoy.
It was so great to have people coming by to greet us and learn about who we are and why this type of service is so important in the community. This is just the beginning - we have miles to go yet but with the support of so many amazing people, local businesses and the #Canadian#cannabisindustry these baby steps will grow into broad strides that will help keep people safe and prevent the needless death of people who use drugs.
We are always looking for volunteers and donations to our causes - a little goes a long way! Wishing everyone a great week! .
Born and raised 20 miles away from here and not a super political person...buttt this is what gentrification has come to here in the Oakland,CA! Like why isn’t this on CNN or the news around the US of A? There’s American citizen women and children who are living in these tents without power, heat or water, etc + it’s f’n 41 degrees —- as I’m driving to work and have to see this grow longer every month smh I finally took a video to let folks know wussup with the town! Let’s just all pray for those who are struggling right now ❤️🙏🏼#tentcity2018#tentcity#gentrification#westoakland
Land of 10,000 Homeless Project
Jerry has been in tent city since July and is experiencing homeless in the winter for his first time. He told me that he has learned things over time, such as always putting the tent door facing south to keep the heat in it. “Minnesota is a great state, especially for the cold. The cold kills the germs so it’s a good thing we have winter” he said. “Minimum wage keeps going up – and guess what happens to the cost of living… that goes up too. People need to be smarter than that. My dad worked 40 hours a week, and that made enough to buy a house, put money in the bank, buy a good quality car, take a two week vacation, have clothes for 5 kids, and my mom could stay home. There is no getting ahead anymore. Minimum wage going up is a joke. It makes people think they are ahead, but then everything else goes up.” We talked about his situation for a few more minutes, then he said, “Thank you for doing this project” and went back to his tent to warm up. #homeless#mn#nikon#share#trending#sad#tentcity#help#donate
