[NEW] Tonight's dinner was at MediaCorp actor Chen Shucheng's newly opened Taiwanese food stall The Chinese Kitchen: Taste of Taiwan🍴 which is humbly tucked away at a corner in Ang Mo Kio's Blk 711 S11 coffee shop.
First found out about this kopitiam stall from fellow foodie @eatsnapsg 🙆♀️ and given that it's in my 'hood, I knew that I had to check it out sometime - and that sometime just happened to be today lol! 🤣 .
As huge fans of 卤肉饭, we had to order the Miso Lu Rou Fan 🥘 ($4.50) which features pork braised with Japanese red miso paste on a bed of Akita Komachi, short grained pearl rice which is known for its premium quality 🍚 .
The Lu Rou Fan was accompanied by a braised egg 🥚, kimchi, seaweed soup & a piquant green chilli 🌶 sauce. All of these for $4.50? Wow! What a steal! 😲 .
Such a pity then that it didn't taste as delicious as I was hoping it'll be - although to be fair, I'm comparing it with the imba bowls of 卤肉饭 that I always eat when I'm in Taiwan 🙊 oops!
Placing comparisons aside and assessing this bowl on its own merits, I would say that the braised pork was rather tender & juicy - although I feel that it could probably be braised for a longer time to achieve that melt-in-your-mouth consistency! 💯 .
I also liked the mixture of flavours in this bowl with the savoury braised pork, tangy green chilli sauce & sour kimchi adding complexity to the taste of the dish. Having said all that, I gotta admit - it's quite delicious la 😜 .
In addition to the Lu Rou Fan, we also had the Grilled Salmon Fish Fillet 🐟 ($9.80) served w. Mild Spicy Coriander ☘ Sauce & Pearl Rice 🍚 .
Although this dish is more than 2x the price of the Lu Rou Fan, I feel that it's still quite value for money cos you get a rather generous serving of perfectly grilled salmon and the same sides as the Lu Rou Fan. Plus, salmon is always bae hehe!
Also loved the coriander sauce that came with the salmon which is really peculiar because I absolutely detest coriander LOL - pluck it off my pizza, remove it from my bowl of noodles... you name it I've done it 🤣 I felt like the coriander sauce complemented the salmon very well & all in all, it's my fave of the two dishes! 😋
