"On Writing" by Stephen King (New English Library, 2000)
Blurb: "In June of 1999, Stephen King was hit by a van while walking along the shoulder of a country road in Maine. Six operations were required to save his life and mend his broken body. When he was finally able to sit up, he immediately started writing. This book is the extraordinary result."
Fact check: King wrote most of this before his accident. And it's an absolute page turner. A brief autobiography is followed by a pithy guide to help good writers get better. I found the dismissal of plotting very refreshing. In King's book, character and story (incident) is all. But it does explain some of the worst excesses of the King oeuvre, when a Plot was sorely needed. Fascinating how he strips the art of writing down to its bare essence. More is always less. (Ironic, huh?) I think there are some passages I'll come back to again and again.
I’ve been a big fan of Stephen King in recent years, but have mainly read his new novels - Bazaar of Bad Dreams (collection of short stories) The Outsider, Revival, Sleeping Beauties - and a couple of his classics - Salem’s Lot and The Green Mile - but have never read his most famous literary horror, despite having watched the movie as a teenager. Now the rain has started and Halloween isn’t too far away, I thought this might be the right time to give it a go - and loving this retro cover, too!
