These brick terraces at 70-80 Mary Ann Street (just opposite the Sydney Technical College) have been here since they were constructed by Matthew Harris in 1869 as rental housing on the southern edge of his estate.
Sir Matthew Harris as he came to be known, was part of the third generation of the Harris family to live in Ultimo. He was also the Mayor of Sydney from 1898 to 1900.
Matthew's grandfather, John Harris, is responsible for the name of the suburb. The reason for the name is entertainingly ridiculous.
Harris called his grant Ultimo Farm, in celebration of being acquitted in a court case on a technicality: namely, that the papers issued had used the Latin term 'ultimo', meaning 'last month', when they should have used the term 'instant', meaning 'this month'. This clerical error meant that the case was made invalid and was thrown out.
The houses remained in single ownership until 1994 when they were acquired by City West Housing, and made available for low income residents.
In 2015 the terraces were sold, each one going for around $1.1 million each.
The name of the street, Mary Ann street, probably comes from the name of Matthew Harris' sister, Mary Ann Harris, who died aged 17.

So my daughter spent all weekend making a poster for her schools appearance on @sunriseon7 & it caught the eye of the super talented @sammacinsta - she proceeded to run a hair colour analysis on @sam_armytage @natalie_barr7 @markberetta & @kochie_online - which is not surprising given how much time she spends on her own do! @edwina_b & @basil_zempilas you made the poster but were spared the live national critique! 📺 💇♀️😀🙌 #sunrise#sunriseon7#sydney
The @frappecafesydney spread ft items off their new menu including the red velvet hotcakes, corn flake crumb french toast, smoked salmon english muffin, open faced bagels, beef burger, smashed avo and haloumi and mushroom stack. The plating here is some of the prettiest on the cafe scene in Sydney and the food tastes as good as it looks! 💐🍰
