From an early age, we are confronted with and compared to perfection and ideals in magazines, advertising and now social media.

Society can make it seem like looking flawless in the ultimate goal in life. And going through high school especially, it can often feel like looking a certain way is the only way to be accepted at all.

Social media hasn't made that easier. There are still too many mean, pointless and body shaming comments going around. All that makes us compare ourselves to unattainable standards for our entire lives.

 But if you think about it, looking "perfect" all the time has no influence over how good a life we have, how much fun we have or how many good people there are in our life.

Because the right people won't give a sh** if we have a thigh gap or not. Going on amazing adventures and trying new things isn't reserved for people who fit society's body ideal. Spending quality time with family and friends doesn't depend on anyone looking flawless.

So why do we care so much? Let us as a society focus on being happy and healthy and living our best lives instead of picking each other apart and constantly feeling like we're not good enough! What do you think?

Some of you reading this genuinely might never have experienced these emotions (highly unlikely) but I used to be one of those people. When my friends were at university up to their ears in course work and dissertations I was dancing away at college loving every minute of my day.. I was doing something I loved and I really couldn’t complain. I woke up feeling so happy and content and my biggest issue was what pasta bake to cook for my weekly flat dinners.

I just could not relate to their high levels of stress and anxiety and I actually started to think there was something wrong with me...
•

Cut to me moving to London from Scotland alone trying to make a career as a dancer, and suddenly the words stress and anxiety were my middle name. I hadn’t suffered from these feelings before and I didn’t know how to manage it what so ever.

Yoga was one of the only places where I could get away from these feelings. I would walk into a studio and leave my problems at the door. It was a beautiful escape for me.
•
•
I had been practicing yoga for years but I had very naively thought it was “just” an exercise class to help improve flexibility and maybe work my core a little.
•

How very wrong I was.
•

Yoga is a beautiful breath led practice and it is so much more than just stretches.
•
•
One of my favourite poses for relieving anxiety is the headstand. It flushes fresh blood into the brain and allows the body to come to complete stillness. Bringing awareness and focus to the entire body.

Before I taught my first yoga class, I was doing a headstand minutes before the students entered the room. I needed a moment to centre myself and relax & focus.

Bilen stannade mitt på vägen ca 6km hemifrån, bara lade av och så gick det inte att styra, lagom läskigt. Jag som "bara skulle åka och köpa mer sparris lite snabbt." Lyckades rulla in den på ett industriområde för att inte stå så illa till och sitter nu och väntar på att resten av familjen skall komma och rädda mamma. Det jag vill komma till är hur förvånad jag är att jag är så jäkla lugn. Ingen stress överhuvudtaget trots att jag sitter fast här och det finns både en lunch som väntar på att lagas, vi ska göra oss fina och passa tider då vi ska iväg i eftermiddag/kväll, jag har inte gått min dagliga #tränaförhjärnan promenad m.m och jag kan inte förnimma någon pulsstegring, ingen irritation, ingen yrsel, ingen huvudvärk, inget illamående.. allt jag tänker är "jaha men fan vad trist att detta händer, det får ju lösa sig på nåt vis" och så äter jag lite av mitt lördagsgodis och tittar på löven på träden som leker i vinden. Headstand known as Sirsasana. Turn Your Perspective Upside Down. Headstand is referred to by some as the "king" of all yoga poses due to its multitude of benefits. As with all inversions, headstand flips your perspective and alleviates pressure on the heart because it doesn't have to work as hard as it normally does to get blood to the upper body. Yoga has been amazing for my own mental health, way before I even knew that’s what it was doing!! I'm really happy to have started practising this again. Even if I'm a bit stiff and wobbly I'm going to keep it up. Because it's invaluable . Hon tröstar, ger mig hopp och helande. Hon ger mig kraft och inspiration. När jag väljer bort naturen väljer jag bort mig själv, det är så tydligt. Jag känner mig bortkopplad och utanför mitt inre när jag inte ger mig själv tid för naturen. Hermit mode. But that can’t last. You need different strategies in your bag of self-care tricks. Scrambling up a mountain in the sun is one of mine. Luckily, I have found a group of friends who also like hiking, and who suggested today’s adventure. I’m so glad I joined in. It’s worth it.

#diary Tag 20: Wochende, das heißt für mich Zeit mit der Familie verbringen. Am Wochenende sind wir oft sehr spontan, was für mich sehr schwer ist. Durch meinen Perfektionismus muss ich alles gut durchgeplant und koordiniert haben. Das ist jedes Wochenende eine große Herausforderung für mich. Aber es macht auch immer wieder Spaß, weil wir ja nicht genau wissen wo es uns hin bringt. Im Moment geht es mir gut, ich bin zwar sehr nachdenklich, aber ich zwinge mich diese Gedanken bei Seite zu schieben. Es gelingt mir von Tag zu Tag besser. 
Aber da ist noch was was mich sehr ärgert: was denken die Leute was Depression oder psychische Erkrankungen sind? 
Ich habe das Gefühl bzw ich habe es auch oft schon zu hören bekommen "bist du wirklich krank, weil du eigentlich sehr fröhlich wirkst und auch auf Instagram Bilder auf denen du lachst einstellst?" Alleine schon so eine Frage finde ich mehr als dreist. Denken solche Menschen das ich den ganzen Tag im dunklen sitze und nur weine und nur über den Tod oder ähnliches nachdenke? Nein, so ist es natürlich nicht. Natürlich bin ich oft traurig aber genauso oft wie ich traurig bin, bin ich auch fröhlich. Bei mir gibt es nur 0 oder 100. Schwarz oder weiß. Depressionen sind nicht immer nur sehr negativ sondern auch positiv. Zumindest sehe ich das so. Ich kann mittlerweile auch was positives an meiner Krankheit sehen. Ich bin sehr feinfühlig, Verständnisvoll, Empathisch, lustig, und wahrscheinlich noch viel mehr Sachen, die mir aber jetzt auf Anhieb nicht einfallen. Deshalb lautet mein Fazit des Tages: zu allem negativen gehört auch das positive.

Today I  had to deal with a situation were a 16 yearsl old felt isolated, and bullied by another colleague at work, sadly the manager was not very  cooperative  to resolve the issue and the young female was traumatized by the treatment she had received. Firsty 16 year olds have pressure of education plus work , and some of them feel isolated and bullied by another colleague and feel unable to speak up. I was happy to assist this young girl and gave as much support and sign posted her to the right service, and the impact of mental health can have on young people can be devasting if they have no one to talk to and raise they concerns. Never be bullied or feel you cant speak up. 📌As employer, you should make sure you  provide healthy working environment to all employees. It can impact the performance and productivity of all the employees to perform their job. Focusing on solving the problem rather than making it worst. 🚫

If you don’t have anyone else to approach, because you work for a small company or there isn’t a grievance procedure, contact the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). If the behaviour isn’t related to one of the ‘protected characteristics’ above, you can’t take your employer to an employment tribunal, but you could involve a workplace mediation service. 👆
