Help Ratan, Helena and Kanan to raise fund to help school children in Shatila Refugee Camp, in west Beirut, Lebanon. We are going part of the Capital Kids Cricket (CKC) volunteering project in partnership with Basmeh & Zeitooneh (a charity supporting refugees in Lebanon) and McKinsey & Company. The main concept will be to introduce cricket to the children and train few PE staff to continue the delivery. Capital Kids Cricket is well-known for introducing cricket across London schools from a very young age. CKC hopes that this might be the beginning of cricket in the school and the community surrounding Shatila camp. We hope cricket can be a useful tool to give the young people something new to try and enjoy.
The cricket camp will take place between 22nd to 26th October 2018.

My friend Rayan, a gorgeous palestinian girl, showed me around in the Shatila Refugee Camp where she used to live.
The Camp was originally set-up for Palestinian refugees in 1949. Since the Syrian War the camp's population is estimated to have 10,000 to 22,000 inhabitants.
We drove on her motorbike through the narrow streets and at nearly every corner we stopped to greet her friends, eat bread, try the shisha and have a chat. This small daytrip suprised me soo much. The vibes and the kindness of the people in the camp was something I seldom experience from strangers.
Really interesting was the small Museum of Memories which some locals created. They collected different items, such as photographies, all kind of house items, jewellery etc and even small jars with earth from their homelands which they brought with them on their flight.

If you want to know more about life in the camp, check out the Facebook of Campji (though mainly in arabic, but great videos about daily camp life 😊).

From the story „The Twice Refugees of Shatila“, Lebanon, April 2017. Children of Syrian refugees play in the streets of the refugee camp. Shatila is a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Beirut, It was established for a number of about 3000 people after the 1948 Arab–Israeli War to accommodate the Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled during the 1948 Palestinian exodus. Since the the Syrian civil war started more than 110,000 Syrian-born Palestinians have fled Syria, becoming so called "twice refugees". As a consequence, the numbers of refugees In Shatila went up from 10,000 in 2014 to an estimate of 24,000 people, who are now squeezed together on approximately one square kilometer. Shatila bursts at the seams, a dark, cramped concrete labyrinth with high criminality rates, and the twice refugees from Syria all share one hope only: to be able to leave this prison and fly to another country as soon as possible.

This post is dedicated to Najwa and Manal. Not only did they give me access to their work world wonders. We became family 👩‍👩‍👧.
.
I found myself embarking an airplane to a destination that leaves no point of return, a country where socio political perspectives divide and unite

I found myself in Shatila amongst stateless Palestinians and Syrian refugees, lethal combination of electricity and water cables spun overhead

I found myself in mount Lebanon amongst Lebanese women and Soul sisters, smoking shisha while applying rejuvenating acid on ageing skin

I found myself in a camp amongst children with curious eyes learning to read and write, girls with long plaits and boys asking about English football

I found myself in a grandmama's kitchen who married her sisters' husband after she died in childbirth. Smiling, welcoming me like another daughter

I found myself in Akkar amongst social workers offering child care facilities while teaching mothers about human rights and sexual health

I found myself in Saidon amongst dust and olive soap in the busy souk, bustling traffic while Mediterranean winter waves washes the shore

I found myself in House of Hope amongst reports on sexual abuse, prostitutes, towels, bathrobes and cushion covers embroided by female prisoners

I found myself in an Armenian restaurant amongst friends with and without faith. Eating and drinking wine, sharing wishes and aspirations for Jerusalem

I found myself in Beirut airport amongst Syrian mothers, fathers, children in their best clothes, granted permission and a one way ticket to Canada

I found myself amongst these words describing the emotions and experiences brought about by my second visit to the one and only Lebanon .

Dr Mohammad Khatib spent 10 years collecting objects from Palestine before opening his own museum in Shatila refugee camp, in Lebanon. These are everyday life objects that refugees have brought with them in displacement or picked up from their former houses by crossing the border at night, during the first years after the Nakba. This museum is the proof of a cultural heritage that is now being reused and exploited to justify the existence of someone else’s culture. Because as Dr Khatib said without the culture a country cannot survive... this place is memory! #beirut #shatilacamp #palestinians #aroundtheworld #aroundtheglobe #ontheroad #ontheroadagain #nakba #refugeewelcome #everydayeverywhere #everydaymiddleeast #memory #memories

Thirty-five years ago this September the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut witnessed a brutal massacre. Following the Syrian Civil War the camp, originally built in 1949 to hold 3,000 Palestinian refugees, now houses between 20,000 and 40,000 people. This summer nine inhabitants answered Peirene's call for writers to respond to their situation with a collaborative piece of fiction. The result is #ShatilaStories. With only 28hrs to go on our Kickstarter campaign please pre-order your copy and support our project - link in bio.

In Shatila, without any formal refugee camps or official status, people struggle to work or send their children to school. Yet even here with the right training creativity can flourish. We need to start listening and communicating, there are enough stories about refugees - we need stories from the refugee writers themselves. This is #ShatilaStories. View over Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon, April 2017. #shatilacamp #refugees #humanrights #christianbobst #humanitarian #reportagephotography #photojournalism #fujifilm #xphotographer #everydaymiddleeast

As part of our research into long term refugee camps in developing countries, Jordana  visited the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon.
Electricity supply quickly becomes an issue in long term refugee camps. Left unchecked inhabitants connect and cipher from the few sources creating hazardous networks.

"Toimivan, laadukkaan ja tasapuolisen terveydenhuollon tarjoaminen on jo itsessään haastava tehtävä. Kun tähän yhdistetään aseellinen konflikti, jossa koko siviili-infrastruktuuri on romahtamassa tai jo tuhoutunut, haaste vaikuttaa mahdottomalta." Uusin Mosaiikin kirjoitus pohtii Syyrian ja Libanonin terveydenhuollon tilaa ja tulevaisuutta. Vaikka tilanne on vaikea, on jotain edistystäkin nähtävissä. Children should have the right to play and be kids. Because of the poor conditions of the Shatila refugee camp the children do not have any open safe space to play in, the roof of the kindergarten was converted into a play space for the children through the support of international aid. If you ask anyone of the kids what their favourite part of the program is you will almost everytime hear about the play space on the roof. Fadiyah has been in the Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon for 5 years, she is originally from Halab, Syria. She told us about her home and that her house had been destroyed by bombs in Syria. Her daughter Farah has graduated from the kindergarten class and now has enrolled in grade one coming top in her class. Fadiyah was so proud of her daughter she brought her along to the interview to meet us.
The kindergarten program gives hope to the parents when they are dealing with such unfortunate circumstances, please consider donating to the program- Link is in the bio.
