After uni I lived in a house with three of my closest friends.
We'd all met years before through our love of climbing and had all joined the university mountaineering society. When we weren't studying we'd be down at local climbing gym setting each other challenges or working out and generally having a good time.
Finally uni finished and each of us transitioned into the workforce, trading our freedom and active lives for tiny amounts of money to sitting motionless in an office for hours on end. I struggled with that.
One day I sat down with my friend Ged. Out of all of us he was the most active. The one who trained longer, worked hard, ran further and climbed bolder. I asked him how he was dealing with the transition, how he could sit still all day and continue be happy. In his strong northern accent he looked at me and said, "Mate I love Mondays, I love sitting at that desk working, because I train so hard at the weekends it's a relief to get to my desk and recover."
This morning the sun rose at 6:36am and my first meeting of the day was at 7am. I could have been prepared and sat at my desk at 6:50am, but that's not me. Not today. I forced myself out of bed, put on a cold, wet, wetsuit, grabbed my camera and rushed down to the beach. I sprinted from my car along the sand and headlong into the water, desperate to line the beautiful light up with the few surfers in the icy cold water. After what felt like only minutes of intense swimming and snapping photos, the memory card was full and it was time to get out. I jogged up the beach, completely exhausted, safe in the knowledge that I'd soon be at my desk with some time to recover.
As always, thank you and I hope you like tonights shot.
