The subway tunnels curving to the west near 40th Street, just before entering the Grand Central express station, 1904. The city's first subway line was operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, which was financed by August Belmont, Jr. William Barclay Parsons was chief engineer, and John B. MacDonald was appointed as contractor. Ground was broken with great fanfare in front of City Hall on March 24th, 1900. Half of the route would be constructed using the cut-and-cover method, where a trench was dug and the steel framework of the subway built below. This was overed with concrete, providing a strong structure that supported the street above. The rest of the route involved tunneling through the incredibly tough Manhattan bedrock, which proved to be an engineering challenge. In January 1902, a worker accidentally started a fire and ignited a dynamite shed near 41st Street and #ParkAvenue . The resulting blast killed 5 people, hurled debris into the tunnel below, and caused over a million dollars in damages. Another deadly explosion in the Fort George tunnel in upper Manhattan killed 10 workers. North of the 33rd Street station the tracks were put into two tunnels built to the side of the 1834 #MurrayHill tunnel. The original route went up Elm Street and 4th Avenue (later Park Avenue) and, turning west, continued to the old Grand Central station (now part of the #42ndStreetShuttle ) and then across to #TimesSquare and up the west side of #Manhattan . With the opening of the #LexingtonAvenue line, the new tracks went below the old ones, turning east into the new #GrandCentral station, which was called the "diagonal station" due to its orientation (this is why trains screech so loudly going into and out of it). The architects of the IRT wanted the original stations to be bright and airy, as some folks were afraid to travel underground. They installed glass skylights in the sidewalk, lined the stations in bright white tiles, and provided colorful decorations unique to each station, so that #commuters could glance up from their newspapers and orient themselves #NYC#subway#transit#1904#history#NYChistory#DiscoveringNYC
He was a soldier for his living. But, he realized himself he want to be a lawyer. So, he got in to the graduate school of law in the early his 30s.
He met a young lady who attended international activities together and he got crushed by her at one sight. And he asked her to be a girlfriend and she said yes.
One day, they had a date together. And it was intense to feel their love each other. After this, they were about to head home.
She went to the toilet before taking a subway. she came back and they hugged. She turned away, and suddenly, He handed her a purple flower. One purple flower.
At that moment, she was very happy and feel loved.
After few months, he said he wanted to be separated from her from the moment. He broke her heart like cutting her mind with a knife.
After they broke up, she thought herself... Giving her a purple flower was his utmost expression of love, but now she think it is a slight love as much as a number of flower. One flower.
Now she want to meet a man
Who gives a bunch of flowers,
not just a flower.
She want true love.
Express your love as many and much as possible. If you don’t, nobody can feel your love.
Give her a bunch of flower, no, give her as much as you love her 💐
