Renowned Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra only photographs people. Some of her works are commissioned by art collectors and other members of the upper class, like this one. I love the cinematic quality of this work: the five children look like they’re starring in a kid version of The Godfather #leavethegun#takethecannoli 🍕 In an interview Dijkstra once referred to one of her favourite books, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. In the book, Dorian’s portrait ages so he himself can remain young forever. In the case of Dijkstra’s family portraits however, as it always is with pictures, the people age while their portrait freezes in time. It thus becomes a point of reference, a symbol of potential yet to be fulfilled.

Just found out that this pic by Rineke Dijkstra was taken in my hometown. I’m super excited about this, so I needed to share ___Rineke Dijkstra, Kolobrzeg, Poland July 1992___ via @artsy #venus#rinekedijkstra#kolobrzeg
Rineke Dijkstra - The Krazy House, Liverpool (2009) video still. I’m a huge fan of Dijkstra and I like just about everything she has done, but this video installation really moved me to tears.
