In honour of our 3x3 Basketball Nationals Event taking place on campus next Tuesday & Wednesday, here's our 'Redback of the Week', Madeleine (Maddy) White.
Maddy (pictured here playing netball) is part of our Women's #RMITRedbacks team taking part in the @3x3hustle next week. While not on the court, whether that be basketball or netball, Maddy is a Chiropractic Student at @rmituniversity.
She first got involved with RMIT Sport while playing for the Redbacks Womens Netball team at the 2017 @unisportau Uni Games (AUG) on the Gold Coast, where her team won bronze overall.
When asked about her involvement with us, she mentioned "through RMIT sport I've had the chance to meet incredible people from other disciplines, which has immensely widened my social network but also allowed me to open discussion on treatment strategies across different professions." A fun fact about Maddy is that she is shaving her head in November in support of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. Great stuff Maddy.
Good luck to you and all #RMITRedbacks next week!
If you haven't yet registered for the event, check out the link in our bio.
Hands up for our ‘Redback of the Week’! Congratulations to Lauren Hannan. Lauren is the Vice-President of the @rmitnetball and a member of the @rmitunisnowsports . Lauren is studying a Bachelor of Business (Economics and Finance). Lauren’s favourite memory with RMIT Sport was when the Netball Club won both the mixed and ladies Grand Final in back to back games during the 2016/2017 summer competition. When asked what the main reason she would recommend joining an RMIT Sport program she said, “It’s not why would you join, it’s why wouldn’t you?! All the clubs have so much to offer in terms of being part of a real community, but as well it’s often way cheaper to play for a uni club than it is anywhere else!” If you would like to find out more about our clubs check out; https://www.rmit.edu.au/…/l…/clubs-and-societies/sport-clubs
Last chance to register for the Footy Skills Day happening this Wednesday at our RMIT Bundoora Football Oval.

We would like to congratulate Sam Taylor for being named this week's 'Redback of the Week'. Sam is the current Team Manager of the UniSport Australia Division 1 Nationals Lawn Bowls team which will compete on the Gold Coast in September.
Sam has been very proactive in his recruitment approach, leveraging social media channels via RMIT Redbacks Lawn Bowls morning page and also through RMIT internal contacts. Sam is currently studying a Bachelor of Bachelor of Mathematics at @rmituniversity, and is a very well respected member of the Chadstone Bowls Club.
Sam first got involved with RMIT Sport through being a casual staff member with the Orientation team. After seeing all of the awesome programs on offer, he took on the role of Team Manager earlier this year.
When asked, Sam mentioned "RMIT Sport has given me a great opportunity to work on my leadership skills. Being a TM requires hard work, love and dedication. It’s not easy, it’s not supposed to be. But so far the opportunity has allowed me to build resilience and confidence in myself." He went on to add 'RMIT Sport offers something for everyone. It is an inclusive and non-threatening environment where you have the opportunity to make friends and test yourself. This culture is driven by both the staff and the students." Best of luck for Div 1 Nationals Sam!
At a University club there are plenty of people coming and plenty of people leaving. Today, we had both. We welcome Tâm from RMIT Saigon South, who will be in Melbourne for the next year on exchange. We farewell Chunyu, who has been training with us since 2016. Doing kendo at a University is such a great opportunity to make new friends around the world, but it’s sad when they leave. We wish you all the best Chunyu and we’ll keiko again.
Congratulations to our 'Redback of the Week' for this week, David Schlicht. David is an Elite Athlete with RMIT University for the sport of Swimming with MLC. When he isn't in the pool training and competing, he is studying a Construction Management course.
David's favourite memory with RMIT Sport was swimming at the Junior World Championships last year. When asked about how being a part of RMIT Sport has helped shape his career, he outlined "Being apart of RMIT Sport and the Elite Athlete Program has really allowed my academic schedule to be a lot more flexible in order to cater for my sporting commitments." #GetActive#RMITSport#RMITStudentLife
Congratulations to this week's 'Redback of the Week', Adam Tsiamis. Adam is both an Elite Athlete with the RMIT Sport program as well as a regular participant and team manager at UniSport Australia Nationals for the sport of Golf.
He is currently studying a Bachelor of Business (Economics and Finance) at RMIT University. Adam has been involved with Golf since the age of 1, hitting balls around the house being his earliest sporting memory. He first got involved with Nationals (formerly UniGames) through hearing about it from a friend.
When asked what his favourite memory with RMIT Sport, Adam quickly mentioned winning back-to-back National University Games Championships which is an outstanding effort!
Adam outlined that RMIT Sport "has given me the opportunity to network with a vast majority of people I wouldn’t been able to meet throughout my regular university life. It has allowed me to travel and gain experience playing different golf courses around Australia which will ultimately help me on my journey to turning professional in the near future." Well done Adam, we know you have a bright future ahead!
Congratulations to Sophie Liu, our 'Redback of the Week' this week.
Sophie is the President of the RMIT Dodgeball Club as well as a volunteer Activator for the RMIT Social Sport program. She has been involved with RMIT for a number of years now and is always enthusiastic to help out and provide feedback on how to improve our current programs.
She recently graduated from a Bachelor of Communications and has now progressed to studying a Diploma of Languages in Spanish part-time.
Sophie originally got involved with RMIT Sport when she joined the RMIT Dodgeball team in 2016's UniBattle. At that time, she states there were only 5 people from RMIT who signed up, they didn't know each other and literally just showed up in Queensland, untrained and all and had a blast! From that, the team of students have stuck together and created the Dodgeball club. What a success story!
When asked, Sophie mentioned "being a part of the RMIT's sporting community has not only trained me in skills to advance me further in my career, but also gave me an opportunity to explore the limit of my capabilities, gave me a nurturing space to transform what's in my imagination into reality and learn from a supporting network of like-minded young leaders..I don't think I would be the same person, or have as much focus on what I want to do If I hadn't been involved with sport clubs here at RMIT. It is so stimulating to continuously challenge, learn and grow with a community sharing the same values. It's hard to leave (even after graduation), so don't hesitate!" Great stuff Soph!
Congratulations to this week's 'Redback of the Week', Nick Campbell, from our amazing Sports Media team. When Nick isn't busy shooting videos of students for us, he is off studying a Master of Advertising with @rmituniversity .
For the last two years, Nick has joined the RMIT #Redbacks away at the @unisportau Southern and Australian University Games (now Nationals) as Sports Media / Videographer. He has also been a part of the Redbacks Snow UniGames team.
Nick's first experience with RMIT Sport was filming the 2016 Southern University Games in Footscray. When asked what his favourite memory was, he outlined that "there's been so many amazing experiences it's hard to choose. Probably when the Men's Basketball team won the semi-final at the 2017 Australian University Games. You could tell that everyone in that arena had a huge amount of care and respect for each other, it was a pretty special moment!"
He went on to state "It's kind of shocking how many genuinely kind and supportive people I've met through RMIT Sport. I've met some of my closest friends through the Sport and Clubs programs. I hate to think of everything I'd have missed out on had I not gotten involved with sport at RMIT." What a great outcome for you Nick!
He has left us with this kind and truthful advice for future RMIT students..."When you're studying it's so easy to get wrapped up in your course and lose track of the fact that life is still moving on around you. Getting involved with an RMIT Sport program is a great way to blow off steam and give yourself the space to find some perspective on what's important. It's also a fantastic opportunity to make lasting friendships with a bunch of amazing people you might not have met otherwise."
Good on you Nick, we look forward to having you involved in future RMIT Sport events.
Meet Phillip Le, this Week's 'Redback of the Week'. This year, Phil took over the role of Club President of the The @rmittabletennisclub and in less than 6 months, has assisted the Club to grow to a significant 90+ more members!
While not playing Table Tennis, he studies at Master of Engineering (Sustainable Energy) at RMIT University. Phil originally got involved with RMIT Sport's programs as he wanted to be more involved in the community at RMIT. He said "RMIT Sport allowed me to build up a strong network of friends at RMIT and work up a sweat whilst doing it." Phil's favourite thing about being involved with a Club is watching members improve their individual performance through training at RMIT. The Club currently trains three days a week in the NAS Activity Spaces (it seems like there's always Table Tennis going on as you walk through the revolving doors of Bld 8!) When asked how his involvement within extra-curricular activities such as sport has assisted Phil to be Work-Life Ready, he stated "Involvement in RMIT Sport strongly encourages the development of teamwork, communication & leadership skills. These skills are imperative to a successful career in any field. Through being involved with RMIT Sport, it has allowed me to develop these skills in a friendly and warm environment." Well done Phil, we wish you all the very best with the remainder of your studies!
A great turn out for the last day of @rmituniversity Street Cricket today.
Street Cricket was a brand new addition to the Social Sport schedule this semester and it has been a huge success. Thank you to the students who have turned up each week - rain, hail or shine!
We will see you back on pitch in Semester 2.
This week's 'Redback of the Week' is the king of tenpin himself, Jordan Wallace. Jordan has been part of our Tenpin UniGames/Nationals team for the last couple of years, as well as this year becoming the President of the inaugural Tenpin Club.
Jordan is currently studying a Bachelor of Physics / Bachelor of Business Management with RMIT University. Jordan's favourite memory of sport at RMIT was winning the 'RMIT Unigames Team of the Year in 2017' with the Tenpin team.
When asked, Jordan outlined that "[bowling at RMIT] has given me so many life long friends. The opportunities RMIT Sport has provided me will stick to me forever." He went on to say "It’s a great way to get active at Uni. Studying all day can be draining and mixing it up with some sport really help keep you going." Great work Jordan, and all the best for the rest of your bowling career in 2018 and beyond!

When asked, Chee Hann said "RMIT Social Sport provides a great platform for me to interact with athletes and students from different backgrounds, which is crucial in terms of the modern working environment. Everyone gets to participate, which is pretty decent for an international student like me." We look forward to seeing you at more Social Sport in future semesters!
Shout out to @rmituniversity Bachelor of Communctaion student & Elite Athlete Laura Hingston who took out Gold at the 10m platform in the Victorian Open Championships earlier this month.

This semester, Salam has been a regular at our Street Cricket on Fridays as part of our RMIT Social Sport program. He represented RMIT Universityrecently at Cricket Victoria's University / TAFE Cup at Fawkner Park, where his team finished in third place. Also, I have noticed an improvement in verbal communication." It is great to have you as part of our program Salam and we wish you all the best for the rest of your studies in Australia.
"The culture that RMIT University has around its UniGames/Nationals sides is absolutely unreal. It manages to keep sucking you in year after year." "The friendships and relationships you build are the foundation of why I keep representing the team. Along with this, the staff of RMIT Sport aren’t just staff, they are also friends who really want the best for every single athlete and truly care for you." "The best advice I can give to anyone starting Uni at RMIT is to get involved in NATIONALS!" - Tyson Lingham, Six-time UniGames Redback & Current Team Manager for Mixed Netball in 2018.

She is part of the AFL Womens Nationals team, and has also helped out RMIT Sport at a number of events throughout her time at Uni, inspiring female students to #GetActive while at campus.
Emma was first introduced to sport through kicking the footy with her brother in the backyard and hasn't looked back since.
When asked about her involvement with sport at RMIT, Emma mentioned, "It has given me so many life long friends... The opportunities RMIT sport has provided me will stick to me for ever." She went on to say "...It’s a great way to get active at Uni. Studying all day can be draining and mixing it up with some sport really help keep you going." Great stuff Emma, all the best for Footy this year!

Congrats to Jimmy Whelan for being named last week's 'Redback of the Week'! Jimmy, or Wheels as his close friends call him, is an Australian cyclist who has had great success in recent years. He interestingly started as a middle distance runner through school and only transitioned to cycling just 18 months ago, following a few unfortunate injuries.
When asked, Jimmy stated that "RMIT Sport enables myself to engage with my University through my passion of cycling. It keeps me actively involved with the University beyond being simply a student." #GetActive#RMITSport#RMITStudentLife
She’s done it! @millytapper wins 🥇 for #TeamAus in the @gc2018!

Last Thursday, the @essendonfc Women's team had their first training session for the year at @rmituniversity’s brand new AFL Oval at RMIT Sports Centre.

Moving forward, as part of our new partnership with EFC, the Women's team will train on the Oval every Thursday evening. If you are keen on watching some talented athletes train, please head along!
