Every now and then, I like to throw in partial range of motion reps in my programming.  A partial lift is a movement that's executed within a restricted portion of a lift, this can be the upper phase OR the completion phase of the lift. Don't get me wrong, I love full ROM but adding this technique allows you to overload the muscles even further. As you may already know,  Overload is an important variable in terms of increasing muscle strength and size. Without significant overload, there is no reason for our bodies to trigger the adaptation response that makes our muscles BIGGER and STRONGER 🙌🏾😀

Wore a size 0-2 all throughout high school 👖-and there’s NOTHING wrong with that!!

I just wanted to shift from kid body to a woman body 👧🏼👱🏻‍♀️ (At least in my eyes, that’s how I was looking at it at the time, easy right? Lol not really) 👀

HERE’S WHAT I WASN’T TOLD ABOUT BULKING...
1. Say goodbye to that extra money I had left at the end of the month 💸It’s all going straight to my stomach, because to gain weight, I have to be in a caloric surplus 🍝 (still working on this)
2. Say goodbye to my favorite jeans! I’ve to buy all new pants-multiple times (currently in my 2nd round of busting out of my summer shorts 😪 bittersweet)
3. Say hello to chafing! When I walk too long in shorty shorts or a bikini, my inner thighs can’t hang. It’s a price I’ve had to pay, and some baby powder I’ve had to buy 👶🏼 For those who have always had this problem, I now feel your pain 🤝
4. Say hello to larger numbers! Bigger sizes, more weight, more money (ya girl has really learned how to budget though!), more calories, and as a bright side-HIGHER WEIGHT NUMBERS IN THE GYM 🏋🏻‍♀️
5. As the legs grow, so does the tummy (in the 2nd pic I’m eating a clif bar but still trying to flex my stomach so that you can’t tell that I have a pot belly) 😂

While I don’t want this to discourage my weight gaining friends-I just want to tell you what nobody told me 💚

But I will also tell you that it’s worth it! Learn what works for you. For every negative is a positive-and I’ve gained more positives in this journey over all ☺️

BREAK THROUGH A PLATEAU 💪💪

If you’ve been training for strength (mostly low reps) and haven’t progressed in a while, here’s how to break through that plateau..

Start doing some high rep work and dial back the central nervous system demand (think: dumbbells, machines, body weight).
-
Your muscles actually recover fairly quickly so you can increase frequency. You’ll likely be sore AF but working through muscle soreness is fine.
-
As a type 2A, I need this kind of variation in my training. With type 2A’s, everything works but nothing works for very long. We can use a mix of neurologically demanding exercises along with muscular work.

Type 1’s do well with mostly neurological work and type 2B’s are potentiated by muscular work. Type 3’s need to feel totally in control of the exercises they are doing and love to plan things out as far out in advance as possible.

Started off with light snatch work today. Snatch balance and hang snatch, focusing on lifting the bar vertically and not arcing it out. (No vid)
Worked up to a heavy 5 on high bar which appears it may be a true 5rm. The struggle was real lol. Followed up with a long pause squat mainly to get a good stretch in.
Decided I'm going to move my bench work to fridays and overhead work to mondays. Think it makes more sense recovery wise for the rest of my program. Did some close grip bench here and it felt really good! Like maybe I should just be benching like this the whole time lol

For example, most people think that in order to build muscle, they need to train harder. That's fine, but if your nutrition isn't on point, you're either going to stay the same size or get fat. Nutrition needs to be ON POINT! If it isn't, Ramsay Bolton will feed you to his dogs.

On top of this, most people think they need to do cardio to build muscle. The truth is, the only reason to be doing cardio to build muscle is if you want to eat more food without getting fat. Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule, and there are some types of "anabolic cardio" like Anabolic Running, but other than that, it's not needed.

Focus on the basics: Calories = BW (lbs) x 16-18. Protein = BW (lbs) x 1. Train each body part 2x per week. Aim to get stronger on each big lift. Over time, the muscle will come itself.

Most guys go from flat chested to fat chested with the approach above. It works. But if your chest is your lagging body part and you want to build it quickly, then you can't just train it once per week. It's just going to stay the same (or grow much slower).

If you're currently training your chest 1x per week and it's growing slowly, imagine how much quicker it will grow if you train it every other day (3-4x per week).

As a general rule, if you want to build your entire body, train each muscle 2-3x per week. If it's a lagging body part (ex. your chest), then you'll need to train it 3-4x per week (every other day). Focus on getting stronger in big compound movements like incline bench press (barbell AND dumbbell), weighted pushups, and even dips. The other 20% of the time, get a nice pump with pec isolation exercises.

Say what you want about leg growth. There are so many different “theories” on it. But for me, how I got my legs to grow, was finding the few exercises that I can really feel the isolation, performing those exercises in absolute full range of motion, and not straying from those.
