OVER 5 TRILLION PIECES OF PLASTIC CURRENTLY LITTER THE OCEAN ! Right now @theoceancleanup is in the final stages of testing and will soon deploy its epic technology to start this historical clean up !
Trash accumulates in 5 ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health and economies. The United Nations estimates that by 2050 the oceans may contain more weight in plastics than fish !
At least 80,000 tonnes of ocean plastic is floating inside this particular North Pacific gyre with 1.8 trillion tiny plastic pieces in this area alone.
Check out @theoceancleanup to follow the historical journey of turning this mess around !
On a whim we decided to go whale watching near the #sanjuanislands . After a few speed bumps (apparently the posted times at which the ferries leave and return to #anacortes are more of a rough guideline and most #whale watching tours start before 330) we made it out to #fridayharbor . @rswillis_seattle found @spiritoforca And we jumped straight from the ferry on to a last minute tour. What an incredible trip! The boat was small and zippy, the tour was intimate—only room for 8 people on the boat including the captain. There were only five of us patrons aboard this time and we saw a small pod of transient #orcas in the middle of a kill! Unlike the resident orcas who typically stick with salmon, these transients feast on squid, seal and sea lions. There was one MASSIVE male, his dorsal fin is 6ft tall! There was also a younger male as well as a mother and calf. Also...we were in #Canada . #boarderhopping#nopassportnoproblem 😂
