I was tipped off about this bird on eBird, so I did some birding in Wascana Park today and I found my 261st Saskatchewan bird species - Black-backed Woodpecker. It’s odd to find this bird south of the boreal forest. It specializes in dead and dying spruce trees, and peels the bark off looking for insects underneath. You can spot their trees by looking for bark flakes around the base.
