I can remember a time before I welcomed essential oils into our life, my baby girl was only 8 weeks old and she had developed her first cold. I put a tablespoon of vix vapor rub in a bowl under her bassinet and poured boiling water over it so the vapors would flow into her airways and clear them up. As a brand new mum I thought if it works for us, it will work for my new baby until I found out that Vicks is not safe for infants.
I then delved a little further to find out why....one online study found that applying Vicks to the chest areas of children (not infants) did little to ease symptoms and compared it to doing nothing at all, or just rubbing petroleum on the kids. I then found out if your baby is under the age of 2, you should never apply Vicks to their chest, nose, feet, or elsewhere....well this was news to me.
The blend is dubbed as a "soothing ointment" that contains “fragrances” of eucalyptus extract, rosemary extract, and lavender extract, not to mention good ol petrolatum and mineral oil. There is a significant difference between plant essential oils and simple plant extracts. Although both may be used in aromatherapy, it is the essential oils which carry the medicinal qualities. Extracts are mainly used in perfumes and have no medicinal value. Petrolatum and mineral oil are byproducts of petroleum, yep that same stuff we fuel our cars with, they’re toxic and once they get into the system they do not metabolize.
We are so grateful that we have pure essential oils to help us now in times like these. Using a diffuser is a safe and super effective way of using these essential oils to clear our babies airways and instead of using Vix and boiling water we now use Easy Air in our diffuser, it’s safe, non toxic and all natural. My kids are happy, healthy and toxin free and we want to keep it that way.
