~
Where does this female statuette wearing a very wide dress and crowned by a veil come from? It is called a "Bactrian Princess". Only 9.2 cm high it is made of steatite (grey) and calcite (white) parts that can be dismantled. It could very well personify a goddess pacifying untamed forces embodied by lions, snakes or dragons. On display now at #BarbierMuellerMuseum!!

‘We are all in drag!’ - Ru Paul
Masks are part of rituals and ceremonies and are an essential feature of the traditional culture of the peoples of a part of sub-saharan Africa. They have spiritual and religious meaning.
The lines and geometry of the African mask inspired the art movements ( cubism, fauvism, expressionism ) in the 20th century.
We love masks, no? Don’t we love their transformative power? The masks we wear: make up, fashion, hairstyles ...... and the personas we hide behind in social settings. And the relief we get when we take it all off!
Masks are fun. They are playful.
Word of caution: make the sure the mask doesn’t become you. Be mindful of the fact that you are in drag. •ASL notebooks @asleninde

"[...] In the museum storage room, all objects of the collection are on shelves, standing close together: sculptures, masks, shields, seats, receptacles of every sort, and many other things as well [...] Entire populations whom I know nothing about, they are there, alien to me, unknown. Voiceless, they speak to me. They touch me, and yet their magic is not my own". (Silvia Bachli, 2018)

Trendsetter Ben Enwonwu has yet again set the standard for appreciation. Bathed in its symbolic luminance of Orange, “African Dances” rejoices with vision of Lagos while incorporating elements of joy and entrancement for African culture. Born in the pioneer city of Southern Nigeria, it is only fitting that Enwonwu joins @sothebys presented teachers of Africa’s art.

Masque kokorra.

Kokorra mask. Papua New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Nissan Island. Basketry, softwood coating, wood, pigments, barkcloth. Collected by Richard Parkinson around 1903.
Such masks were made in secret and worn by men during the planting to stimulate workers and ward off evil spells. Once the work and banquet were over, the masks were thrown into the sea. This exemple is on display now at the #BarbierMuellerMuseum.
