Movie Review GRADE: A-
Do yourself a favor and watch the movie adaptation of Meg Worlitzer’s The Wife starring Glenn Close. Superficially it’s a movie about the “behind every powerful man there’s a powerful woman,” but it’s much more interesting than that, thanks in large part to Close’s emotional and strong performance. From the opening scene, when the phone rings with the call of the Nobel Committee’s announcement to Mr. Castleman that he’s won the Prize, Joan (Close) clutches the phone struck by the realization that the prize is as much hers—didn’t she put up with and inspire him all these years?
As they travel to Europe to collect their prize with their son, they will embark on a trip to the past—the 1950s New England college where they met and when society’s dictum condemned Joan to the life of a subservient woman. Has it all paid off? Glenn Close masterfully navigates the emotions that must accumulate over a lifetime of such penance, and by the end will teach deep lesson in life, love, and inspiration. #movie#film#thewife#glennclose#christianslater#feminism#cinema#theater#nobel#megwolitzer
THIS is the Whole30 version of Southern Pecan Chicken Tender Salad from O’Charley’s. For all you west coaster’s, I think O’Charley’s is primarily a southeast restaurant. They have a fried chicken salad with candied pecans and it is sooo good. It comes with a vinaigrette but I always got it with honey mustard. I’ve been daydreaming about this salad, so I had to make it! For the chicken, I modeled it after the Chicken Cutlets recipe in the Whole30 cookbook by using almond flour and coconut flour, and then added 2 tablespoons of Grilling Seasons Chicken to the mixture. It makes the perfect tasting “fried” chicken. I added sliced strawberries, mandarin oranges and pecans! Then, the most exciting surprise from tonight was a recipe from Jean Choi @whatgreatgrandmaate! Her Whole30 Honey Mustard recipe is delicious! I’m super pumped to finally have a healthy recipe for this dressing that I love! #30foodie#ocharleys <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Fun fact - speaking of the West coast, I was born in Walnut Creek, California! (Bay area) Both of my parents are originally from Kentucky, so I ended up back here when I was little. California is beautiful, and I could even see myself there, but I definitely consider myself a Kentuckian, and we love our fried chicken and bourbon! 🍗🥃❤️ #Kentucky#California <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>#whole30#whole30recipes#whole30alum#whole30life#iamwhole30#recipes#food#instafood#foodphotography#moviefood#healthy#healthyfood#diet#realfood#motivation#movie#weightlossjourney#paleo#dairyfree#cooking#organic#lifestyle#nutrition#foodie
In October 1928, the banana workers formed a union. They demanded the abolition of contract work and vouchers as a form of payment, a 50 percent increase in wages, improvements in hospital services, hygienic living quarters and paid Sundays for rest. The strike dragged on. The company brought in scabs. The Minister of Industry in Bogotá ruled in favour of the company that the striking labourers were not employees of the company since they were sub-contracted. The workers were left in limbo and situation deteriorated. Washington threatened to send in the Marines to protect the interests of the American company from the ‘communists’. Threats from the hegemonic power could not be taken lightly especially since Colombia had recently lost Panama and Washington had acquired the habit of sending warships and mercenaries to Central America to play on local rivalries and install radically pro-Washington governments which allowed American businessmen to gain control over the region’s main export, bananas. American companies had, in effect, become the de facto governments in many of the Central American countries. President Miguel Abadía Méndez declared a state of emergency and dispatched the regional military commander, General Carlos Cortés Vargas, to Ciénaga to break up the strike. The company provided the general with a luxurious home and the assembled soldiers with alcohol, food and access to whorehouses. The general immediately replaced the soldiers from the coast with soldiers from the interior.
After Sunday mass, the striking workers and their families gathered in Ciénaga’s central plaza expecting to hear from the governor. They waited until nightfall in vain. They moved to an area near the train station to put down for the night. At the crack of dawn, intoxicated soldiers arrived, blocked off the streets and set up machine guns on the nearby roofs. General Cortés fired a shot in the air to wake up the throng of sleeping bodies and gave them five minutes to clear out. A trumpet call announced the start of the five minutes. There was confusion. No one moved. When the allotted time elapsed, the general gave the order to shoot.
