Surrounded by clouds and hundred year old cinder cones, hiking to the 13,700 summit of Mauna Kea was a bit surreal. The desolation and isolation I experienced was something new to me. Unfortunately, a rough episode of high altitude sickness hit me at around 13,000ft and I couldn’t recover, forcing me to turn back and descend to lower altitudes.
