I want to share this on my birthday, today, which is World Refugee Day. So many live fortunate lives. Almost everyone I know, do. And so many people don’t - how can we, the fortunate ones, reach out and make a difference...#Repost @johnstanmeyer with @get_repost

#worldrefugeeday - Elly Choval, a Cuban exile, swims in the waters off Miami where she resides in 2007. Escaping from Cuba as a child when the Catholic Church arranged an air rescue for thousands of Cuban Children when Fidel Castro came to power, she swore never to return until Castro was dead. But in the US she and a few others formed an organization called Pedro Pan (or Peter Pan) to create a family for all the children who had to leave their childhood behind in Cuba and live with distant relatives or families they didn’t know. Every day that the weather allowed, Elly would swim in the ocean. She said she swam in a sea of memories because the waters that lapped the shores of Miami also lapped the shores of her homeland, Cuba, and she would remember the childhood that was interrupted by politics and a dictator who ruled for decades. Sadly Elly died before Castro did and never returned again to her homeland.
