This man helped to show the world how great Los Angeles can be. He eschewed Michelin ratings and then had a raspado in the park. He told us to get off our asses and try the lengua (or tripas) at that taco stand down the street. He asked us to try his favorite papaya salad, and he never stopped enjoying Sapp Coffee Shop.
I started reading Jonathan Gold’s reviews when I had just moved and lived maybe four blocks from the LA Weekly offices. His writing helped me to see an entirely different world in a city that had otherwise been completely foreign to me.
I don’t think we’ll see one like him anytime soon.
