I think most importantly, solo travel has reinforced lessons from Joseph Campbell’s teachings of detribalization for me. Regardless of if we choose to notice it or not, our (subjective) opinions of the world around us are largely codified by the tribes from which we are from. Whether they may be ethnicity, gender, profession, where you went to school, how much money your family has, etc, we take in ideological values with our mother’s milk, rarely questioning them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To begin to see what is actually happening around us, Campbell argued that one must detribalize...identify what our tribes are, and leave them. Get away long enough to begin to move towards an objective vantage point, so that we may think critically about the data flowing through reality. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m passionate about this idea because my country is more fractured than we’ve been since our civil war. And no one seems willing to budge, to extend an olive branch to the other side. Instead they’re doubling down, creating culture wars like rival gangs. The left and the right seem hellbent on playing an arrogant tug of war over the nation until it rips at the seems, like children arguing over possession of a toy. We’ve traded empathy for spite, and no one notices. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On both sides, people are rushing to blame the problems in society on the other, with some aggressive fix for everything. But I think that in order to prescribe, first we must properly diagnose the problem...America has a case of toxic tribalism. And the first step to rehabbing this disorder is to leave one’s tribe, alone, uninstall the operating software, and reformat the brain’s hard drive.
Always be the best person you can be. Be kind even when you're tired. Be understanding even when you're angry. Do more than you're asked, and don't ask for anything in return. Listen when someone talks, and really listen to; stop just thinking of how you'll reply. Tell people that you love them and that you appreciate them. Go out of your way to do things for people. Be the greatest person you can possibly be.
One thing you should never do? Never spend your time trying to prove to anybody that you're great, your actions will speak for themselves and we only have limited time on this earth, don't waste it.
This was my first time visiting DC with no other reason than to be a tourist. We checked out the monuments, a couple of art museums, the national mall, Georgetown and the DC Alley Museum. The alley museum might have been one of my favorite parts of our trip because of the beautiful artwork displayed on each street. Another plus to visiting DC is that you can find manyyyy things to do for free.99. I don’t mind spending some coins on travel buhhhh if I can have fun for the freelo, why not?
With summer quickly coming to an end, do you guys have any last minute trips you’re looking forward to?
Despite knowing they won’t be here for long, they still choose to live their brightest lives - sunflowers 🌻 @rupikaur_
Do you guys repeat or write down affirmations for yourself? I recently saw a therapist that recommended recording my affirmations on a voice note, enough to play for about 10 minutes (I repeated them a few times) and then listen to it first thing in the morning and again at night. It’s been my first week of doing this, but I’ve already noticed my thoughts are more positive ✨
