Soon I will be going back to Lebanon to work on a project for the @rebeccadykesfoundation. I’ve been migrating to medium format cameras this year purely to prepare for this and feel a lot of (self-imposed) pressure to do the best job possible. The foundation is going to work on sectarian tension, and on violence against women in the country. It couldn’t be at a better time than now with what’s happening:
The scale of Syrian refugees arriving in Lebanon since 2012 is staggering, with over 1.1 million people fleeing the war. With a population of approx.. 5 million Lebanese, that’s equivalent to 13 million refugees into the UK, or 65 million into the US!
Entire families, communities and even villages have been uprooted and resettle together inside the country. Refugees are often viewed with suspicion, not allowed to buy property or have work permits, and live in squalid conditions relying on NGO support to survive. These are people who have worked and supported themselves for their whole lives.
It’s a huge burden for the country to bear and sectarian tensions, already rife in the country, are high as delicate balances in the demographic change. Many experts feel that the influx of mainly Sunni refugees assisted Hezbollah’s recent election landslide win in the country.
It’s easy to be critical, but the Lebanese people are wonderful and so resilient, experiencing ‘military interventions’ by the French, Britain, Israel, Syria and the US; a brutal sectarian civil war that ended 28 years ago, and despite everything the people mostly take it in their stride. In London, if our broadband stops working, it’s a disaster!
In this photo, a young boy stands in the stairwell of a squat in southern Lebanon. With yet another new offensive in Syria looming, his future is anything but certain. What kind of future does he have?
Proud to be part of this huge successful event 🙌🎧
