I have a sentimental rather than a proper knot garden. I brought a ton of baby Buxus from my garden in Greenwich years ago and they sort of wobble along in a back of a napkin design that took me 10 minutes to sketch and 30 to throw in the ground. The goal was to plant those suckers fast because I had moved them bare root. (I actually had potted them up to move them but @jch35 saw that the station wagon was riding 4" off the ground and asked me politely to come up with a plan B.). I have never gone back to make it proper and organized and maybe never will. So it has all sorts, shapes and sizes in it, and even a couple of topiaries that will be moved after this garden goes on tour in a couple of weeks. But everything looks better with a bit of trim, tidy, and compost as mulch. #knotgarden#jollygardener#compostasmulch#thisisnotperfection#babybuxus#babyboxwood
Had a great day in Southampton. Visited the Tudor house, somewhere i havent been before. It was really interesting and learned alot about the town and its history I never knew #tudorhouse#southampton#history#knotgarden
This beautiful cotswolds stone property is a private house in the middle of Malmesbury, set in the midst of five acres of breath-taking gardens. @abbeyhousegardens are open daily at present and I highly recommend a visit. (See previous post)
History abounds here, too.
Athelstan, first King of England is reputed to have found his final resting place here, having been moved from the grounds of Malmesbury Abbey immediately next door to avoid the deconsecration of his grave by the Normans. And the town itself was an important Roman settlement. .
The gardens, by comparison, are a relatively recent creation, designed and planted over many years by the owners, the Pollards. A true labour of love. And a hugely inspiring place to visit. .
