We moved on from the NP205 and focused our attention on the SM465 tranny. This version has a standard 10 spline input shaft, but with a later model 32 spline extended output shaft. Seen here is the very rare 85-91 SM465/NP205 6-bolt circular adapter housing. Unlike the earlier models, the male output shaft mates directly into the female input shaft of the transfer case with no adapting collar. Naturally, the trans case and adapter housing were layered with three decades worth of crusty crud. We cleaned most of the crap off and opened her up. The gears, synchros and bearings seemed to be in good condition, but since we had a rebuild kit ready we went ahead and disassembled it all. Unlike the NP205, the SM465 needed a bearing puller to get all the bearings off.
