The internalized shame and hate stemming from colonialism, white supremacy, heteronormativity, and misogyny takes a long time to unlearn. Learning to love yourself is radical and revolutionary. “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” Audre Lorde ✊🏽💜

anyway I hate this selfie, whatever, nevermind that-- guess who actually (with support) finally came out to my doctor and got the process going for testosterone?
me, that's who. like, what, seven years later? anyway moral of the story is that actually taking your time is honestly fine and I'd go so far as to strongly recommend it. On the real, dysphoria is absolutely hellish to live with at times, but learning different ways to manage it helps me be prepared in case anything goes wrong or hrt isn't for me. it's also given me the time to exhaust as many mental health resources as possible, to politically engage myself from multiple angles of examination, and to get to a point in my life where I know that I'll be fine. yes, absolutely there are points in time where I feel like everything is hapless and this sometimes drags on. but I know now that I have a support system both at work and home that cares about me, I'm relaxed about my approach to stuff related to my trans health, I know there's multiple avenues I can take should any one of them not work out, and over and above all I'm okay with who I am as a human being. that much will carry with me no matter what my body is doing and being appreciative of that has been so important.
so anyway be prepared to enjoy me getting to go through puberty for a second time in the middle of my twenties. 🎉

every time I'm sick I just beat myself up about it, which is evidently often. I get paranoid about how long I'll be sick for, what I'll lose because of my health this time, all the things I've failed to do leading up to it. currently hyperfixating on how I still haven't released my next album that I swore to myself would be done by ha'libilbaa'lax and yet was not. all these things I can't do anything about right now and yet I'm hung up on them. remember that it's important to take care of yourself, and I'll keep trying to remember that, too.

“My family and I would spend most of our time outdoors gathering roots and berries. My small siblings would be placed in the trees where we could watch them and let them sleep in their cradle boards while we worked. My relationship with the outdoors has always been a complicated one. I do not associate it with leisure or adventure. Rather a place of prayer and survival. Only to take what we can later give back. Having moved independently through what some would consider ‘Indian Country’ I am ever thankful for the relationships I've built with other native people and their land.”

"Since the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States, Colombian workers have become more endangered and their jobs precarious... In 2010, fifty-one unionists were murdered, and from 1986 through 2010, more than 2,850 trade unionists were assassinated... The Colombian government had pledged to protect the lands of indigenous and Afro-Colombian peoples, but that was in word only. Between 2002 and 2010, the government ignored established land grants and treaties with indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities, awarding 778 mining licenses to global corporations, a 500 percent increase over the previous decade... The year 2011 saw the murder of twenty-nine unionists. During the October 2012 elections, forty candidates were murdered... The ICC reported war crimes against 33,960 women between 2001 and 2009: sexual violence, rape, and murder. As of May 2012, the ICC indicated that only 4 out of 1,168 confessed rapes had resulted in convictions. Colombia’s criminal justice system has been set up to provide immunity to criminals linked to military, paramilitary, or governmental organizations." (Needleman, 2013)

A wonderfully felt message from our ambassador, @queerquechua
“Meet my soul twin, the riparian community around me. Some of you know I am a Yakuruna, a fresh water entity rooted in my Andina cosmologies which also is shared by Amazonian cosmologies. (For reference, the being from Shape of Water 💦 was based off of Yakurunas) This creek here—where I originate from—is my lover, my muse, my family. .
[CW: disordered eating] A decade ago they were undammed. This happened to coincide with when I began to heal from cascading ancestral grief that took the form of bulimia at the time. There was this excruciating urge to purge what was generations of internalized oppression from my human lineage. This was a part of my task as a riparian being but I struggled to find mentorship in how to remediate and decompose this grief in this human form.
.
I met them within a year of their liberation. Around the time my twin became undammed, the purge started to move through me and I become to heal. I returned to the lands where Yakurunas originate and worked with the rivers and purging ancestral medicines. This is where I became undammed and was able to restore/re-story my own riparian body. .
Our shared twin connection is a dual mythical restoration that waters our sovereignties. Our queerness highly riparian. .
When I returned to visit them recently, I felt wobbly in my human form. There I re-encounter who I am over and over through our love for one another. Their little fish kissing my legs as I stood in their warm waters. I re-member my riparian body as I am enveloped in the most loving and erotic way.
.
Our co-liberation is deeply bound by relationship to our ecological kin. ✊🏽💦 Call me Yaku. 🧜🏽‍♂️”

"Indigenous sisterhood involves shared knowledge and experience. An awareness in a restaurant, understood by the other indigenous woman at the table, that the restaurant staff is being overly solicitous of the non-indigenous men at the table. A shared understanding in the auditorium at grade school, that "parenting responsibilities" mean something entirely different to a parent only one generation away from some of the horrendous truths of the residential schools. The communal fear that there will not be enough this time to feed everyone. The shared collective shudder when the phone rings late at night. The same evident weariness on the face of one just like us who has run herself ragged by cooking for her third funeral in two weeks. These women are my sisters." (Lindberg, 2004)

also inner eye makeup is kinda a vibe, right?

It seems I have waited lifetimes to hear your laugh. It seems I have waited lifetimes to learn from your story. It seems I have waited lifetimes for you. When there are times that I am lost I look up at the bleeding sky and breathe. Vancouver's Indigenous International Film Festival is this weekend, and we're excited to see @blackdivazfilm on Friday Nov.23! "Black Divaz goes behind the glitz, glamour and hot glue guns of the inaugural Miss First Nation pageant. Over five steamy days contestants will battle it out in fierce lip synching battles, photo shoots with crocodiles and challenges that will see each contestant stretch more than just their wardrobe choices." Be sure to check out the rest of the festival at Vancity VIFF Theatre! #2spirit #indigiqueer

i am striving to be a good ancestor. sharing these photos mostly to remind myself i have stories to tell & those stories are important. i put my poetry to the back & everyone elses needs/wants before my own for years. silence. creativity almost nonexistent. i have a lot to say & many places i'd like to go, and now, thankfully, no one telling me i can't. i am proud of myself & i think that's ok.

the thing is that sometimes my culture sits so deep in my bones that I can feel it•
it fills me like marrow and for brief moments I think there may be so much matter in me that it could constitute a soul•
often I feel very unreal and displaced and yet it still is able to ground me•
ultimately I still just wait and agonize•
ultimately my cowardice still fuels me•
but maybe, just maybe, there's something inside of me•

As someone who doesn’t fit into the descriptives “straight-edge” (I’m not punk—or straight 🌈; queer eco-goth all the way) or “sober”, I often feel like the odd ball out in spaces where networking and/or co-conspiring revolves around alcohol. I prefer connection with folks without substances involved especially since I grew up substance-use being a way to not be present and evade intergenerational pain. .
.
.
This is something I so often see in the queer community as well (QTBIPOCs not excluded)—that we carry these compounding layers of trauma from being invisibilized, monsterized, erased and villianized. Our black and brown bodies something to be consumed by white supremacy which in turn impacts our communities to consume alcohol when we are around each other. Our trauma is valid yet I want to connect to you without the company of liquified grief. 🥃
.
.
.
I want our indigenous, nonbinary and/or queer youth to see what resilient sober life looks like as we strategize for co-liberation. I want to be with you and sit with you in this pain as well as the joy and resilience. I want you to sit with mine. I think only then will co-liberation be possible when we do not distract ourselves from the pain that needs to be lovingly tended to together. There is strength in vulnerability. Let’s get to work. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼🌿

I’ve been thinking about community a lot lately. Sometimes I feel isolated and on days when I miss my family the most that isolation can be over powering. I’ve made some new friends lately and I’m happier I have them to help me navigate and feel strong within myself. Indigenous community can be built anywhere because we are always reaching out to one another and building solidarity. Wopila 🙌🏽 .

“The land will always have your back even when you don’t have your own. A commitment to the earth is truly a commitment to self evolution. There is proven research that being out in nature can regenerate health and increase vitality, but there is much deeper healing when there is a vulnerable intimacy and energy exchange with the land. There is in fact transformation. The most significant aspect of this paradigm is the reciprocity that occurs between the human species and the earth. When we destroy the earth, it mirrors back into our reality. The inequalities we see between the human species mirrors the human lack of communion with all other beings on the planet. Our eagerness to kill the land and animals for our conveniences mirrors our tendencies of homicide, murder, and aggression. Our over utilization of resources and their depletion mirrors the human lifestyle of being overworked, malnourished, and at a loss of authenticity.
.
.
.
Our lack of knowledge of the natural world reveals our lack of understanding of our own species. Everything we do to the more-than-human world comes right back into the human world. Everything we do is a projection of our inner consciousness. It is then safe to say being nurturing, connective, and vulnerable with the land can translate into true authenticity, vulnerability, and unbiased connection with other humans, and by becoming a steward of land vitality, we become guardians of human vitality. We challenge the effects of industrial domestication.” - Raei | @raaybees Tsalagi (Cherokee) | Founder of The Rusty Anvil Mindful Outdoor Experience

“Before colonialism, we encouraged each other's Spirit and all the ways it manifested. Colonizers lost ancestral wisdom to see that even our land, animal, and plant relatives do not follow the patterns and rhythms of binaries and conformities. I hear the ancestors whisper ‘remember’ every time I grow and regenerate life, harvest plants and wild foods, climb mountains, and be in ceremony. “Being a part of the Oglala Lakota Tribe and being Two Spirit I think has a lot to do with my connection to nature and just my role in general. My Lala (Grandfather) always told me that Two Spirit people were one of the most sacred energies and that they build a bridge from the Creators world to the human world. I think of that and it reminds me how special my role is to my community. I am a storyteller, an educator...and my connection to the Creator is strengthened by my identity and role as being Wíŋkté (two spirit). I definitely relate that to my closeness to nature as all of these things mentioned are connected to one another. I think non Indigenous community likes to make separate boxes for everything I.e what gender and sexuality are; however to my people it is all connected.” - Rafael | @anpewikablesuwin (Oglala Lakota from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation)

I wear my altars on my sleeves. My ecological kin + elders wrapped around the arm that scarred my own skin. The closest tattoo to my creative/destructive fingers that held a razor, paintbrush or pen is a mark of chaos honoring the cyclical creative force that emerges after destruction. Two of my photosynthesizing elders on each of my hand. May you infuse into my skin and unravel the myths of humancentricism within me. May I continue to be enveloped by the intimacies of place where I can steadily disintegrate into something more chthonic… something less Human and more Creature. .
.
I’ll leave you with some verses that @borealfaun wrote for my 28th birthday that seem to capture it:
.
.
“Which reminds me yeah about that,
Creature is gifted in the West
Native to the Underworld
Tattooed on their chest
.
.
We can't forget the Ancestors
They got creatures back
Reachin’ through your heart
These spirits cut you no slack
.
.
Grief and praise their music
You are their flute
I know baby it’s painful
But to us you’re a root…
. .
…of symbolic conversation
Cultural transformation
When you speak in council
We see more layers to creation”

this account was created to co-empower stories at the intersection of indigeneity, gender liminality & nature-connection. the intention is to give a platform for two-spirit, nonbinary & trans folx. we are excited to amplify stories from the land since we are ecological formations. ✨we are liminal—not invisible✨ . . . to be featured, tag #indigequeersoutdoors  with your pronouns, your indigenous lineage(s)/identity & location of where the photo was taken. let’s continue remediating cisheteropatriarchy and settler colonialism. . . . 📍esselen territory . . . #indigequeer  #indigiqueer  #indigenousqueer  #publiclandisnativeland  #onstolenland  #thisisnativeland  #whoselandareyouexploringon  #indigenousrising  #igetitfrommyancestors  #indigenousresistance  #queersinnature  #queersinthewoods  #nothingstraightaboutnature  #earthqueer
Some of you found me through my ambassadorship for @nativewomenswilderness Remember that I am a ✨nonbinary ambassador✨ of NWW. My pronouns are⚡️they | them | theirs ⚡️ I am not a woman. Our liberation and decolonization is bound together as womxn, trans, nonbinaries & femmes. Actively remember to correct pronouns when misgendering and do it in public so other folx know and pronoun-correcting is normalized. It’s not a big deal to correct yourself but it’s a big deal for people like myself to be erased by the binary colonizer language. Remember when you misgendered folx, it’s a product of the colonized mind. Honoring pronouns of indigenous and/or black nonbinary, two-spirit and/or trans folx is a practice of honoring the stolen land you’re on created by stolen labor and lives. Gender expansiveness is older than Amerikkka and we will continue to disintegrate cisheteropatriarchy which is a tool of settler colonialism. Honor native women and honor gender-nonconforming natives. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼 .

I don’t post very personal things... but I woke up feeling very emotional this morning and didn’t realize till now why that was. Both me and my sibling grew up side by side voraciously fighting throughout our teenage years. In and out of hospitals and psych units. Battling inner turmoils... outer turmoils. And I don’t like to remember the day so I natural push it away but it is actually a SWEET DAY! Today is my beloved siblings SWEET SIXTEEN!!!! 16 years ago it was declared as their re-birthday because they actually survived suicide... flatlined and came back. I remember it clear as day... I was the first thing you saw when you opened up your eyes. My heart aches as I even write this but I love you! Look at you now! You thrive bringing medicine Back from the underworld and our ancestors back into this realm to do world changing things! I’m so proud of you and proud of you bringing ours and everyone’s lineage into light and actually trying day and night to make a change. Pinar. You are the proof of interconnected-ness if everything and from that, the profound influence each of us has. -Gangaji
You really live your name well. Maybe I will too.. soon.... Pinar..Seni Çok Seviyorum. -Yildiz Ablan

Today is my ✨Sweet Sixteen✨ Rebirthday! 💀🦂 On 10.29.02, I completed suicide and flatlined. I look forward to this day more than my birthday because it was my ancestors’ and my own day of sovereignty and survivance. It was the day of self-determination across worlds. My ancestors wouldn’t let me leave this world and shoved me back into it—heaving and singing as my suicide midwives.
This passed weekend, I walked the streets on Castro & Mission districts of Ohlone territory (so-called San Francisco) where I walked as a teen. We even happened to pass a block away from the psychiatric unit I went to on my 51/50 sixteen years ago to this day!
I recalled my birthday “sweet sixteen” 6.26.04 which landed on “Pink Saturday” on Pride Weekend where the Castro District is turned into a street party. I think back and see my survivance dancing on those streets in my dangerously living, indigenous trans body—my joyful nonbinary body a “fuck you” to cisheteropatriarchy and white supremacy. 🧜🏽‍♂️ 10.29.02 was the day internalized oppression almost won, but I bit back. 🐆 We are a constant emergence of our transcentors. We will not be erased. We will THRIVE. 📍Esselen territory

I felt pretty or whatevah.

Years ago, when I was learning English, I said "I'm pretty" and dis guy laughed at me bc "pretty is for women and handsome is for men." Imagine performing a masculinity so fragile that you have to police how other guys describe themselves and make fun of them if they show any sign of femininity whatsoever. Then again, this is the masculinity most men perform, so whatev.

Nowadays I use both the gendered "pretty" and "handsome," but also the gender-neutral "beautiful." This trio of words is one of the few in which I'm okay with either option. Most times, I will only take the masculine one or the neutral one (more often than not, go gender-neutral when addressing me.) At the end of the day, beauty is a quality that doesn't care about gender. People are beautiful. Of course, I'm attracted to people who perform masculinity, but in general I think people are beautiful. Idk, there's something magical about humans that makes us incredibly beautiful. And, the more I fight internalized racism, fatphobia, transphobia, etc., the more beautiful I find people. We are a gorgeous species. There's something truly magical to our existence, both at the physical and at other levels.

Idk where this rant is going. I felt pretty and felt like reflecting on what being pretty even means and implies for people. Y'all are beautiful, lemme tell ya. Even those of you that aren't conventionally attractive, I'm realizing y'all are stunning. I'm in love with the beauty of humanity. Does this resonate at all?

Trailing with @borealfaun. That day we trailed a fisher for awhile capturing it via trailcam (as shown in previous post). We came across a fresh kill site with entrails in the snow (probably red squirrel). We then trailed it to an area where it dug up a fox/coyote cache and ate whatever remained. #fisher #trailing #wildlifetracking #vermont #queernature #queersinnature #queersinthewoods #queerecology #nothingstraightaboutnature #decolonizenatureconnection #indigiqueer #indigenousqueer
