Regrann from @nasahubble - Happy #FourthofJuly from the cosmos! These "celestial fireworks" are actually the Antennae Galaxies.
The two spiral galaxies started to interact a few hundred million years ago, making the Antennae galaxies one of the nearest and youngest examples of a pair of colliding galaxies. Nearly half of the faint objects in the Antennae image are young clusters containing tens of thousands of stars. The orange blobs to the left and right of image center are the two cores of the original galaxies and consist mainly of old stars criss-crossed by filaments of dust, which appears brown in the image. The two galaxies are dotted with brilliant blue star-forming regions surrounded by glowing hydrogen gas, appearing in the image in pink.
The image allows astronomers to better distinguish between the stars and super star clusters created in the collision of two spiral galaxies. By age dating the clusters in the image, astronomers find that only about 10 percent of the newly formed super star clusters in the Antennae will survive beyond the first 10 million years. The vast majority of the super star clusters formed during this interaction will disperse, with the individual stars becoming part of the smooth background of the galaxy. It is however believed that about a hundred of the most massive clusters will survive to form regular globular clusters, similar to the globular clusters found in our own Milky Way galaxy.
The Antennae galaxies take their name from the long antenna-like "arms" extending far out from the nuclei of the two galaxies, best seen by ground-based telescopes. These "tidal tails" were formed during the initial encounter of the galaxies some 200 to 300 million years ago. They give us a preview of what may happen when our Milky Way galaxy will collide with the neighboring Andromeda galaxy in several billion years.

“Deeds not words” 125 yrs since some very brave woman (and men) stood up for what was right, making it possible for the likes of me and future generations of girls to have the freedom to make choices that are best for their families, and themselves! Snowballing a gradual change of mind set as to how women of today are viewed and treated. We’re not 100% there yet, but the more women who stand up for individuality, doing what makes them happy, feeling proud of who they are, how they look, not conforming as to the general preconceptions and expectations that’s still put on ladies of today should get us there.
Regardless of gender, race or sexuality we should have the freedom as individuals to lead our lives that are fulfilling and make us happy! Support, embrace and love our loved ones for who they are and how they want to lead their lives.
This is me, now, feeling empowered, strong and sometimes invincible on the inside and out. This is due to having grown up and being surrounded by some very powerful women who have shaped my way of thinking, proving that even on my own I have the inner strength to be independent, feeling confident in the big decisions that need to made on a daily basis, unique, needing no validation from anyone else. I hope I can be this role model for my two young girls.
So again, I can’t thank these people enough as truly believe had they not risked so much in making these monumental changes in history things would be very different for young women of today. I wonder if they could see how things turned out how they’d feel, id really hope they thought it was all worth it
Happy 35th #IndependenceDay to the #Kings and #Queens from #StKittsandNevis ‼️ 🇰🇳🇰🇳🇰🇳
#SaintKittsandNevis is officially called the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. An island nation in the #WestIndies in the #LeewardIslands , it consists of the islands of Saint Kitts, Nevis, and #Sombrero . Most of the people on these islands are descendants of Africans who were originally brought to the islands as slaves.
In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed on Saint Kitts and named the island Saint Christopher, after his patron saint. During this same voyage, Columbus also landed on Nevis. It wasn't until 1623 that English colonists began to settle on Saint Christopher's Island. At that time, the English shortened its name to #SaintKittsIsland . In 1628, English colonists began to settle on Nevis. For the next 100 years, the British and French formed a rivalry for control over the islands. In 1782, the British took permanent control over the islands.
The islands, along with nearby #Anguilla , were united in 1882. They joined the West Indies Federation in 1958 and remained in that association until its dissolution in 1962. Saint Kitts, Nevis, and Anguilla became a self-governing state of the #UnitedKingdom in 1967. Anguilla seceded in 1980, and Saint Kitts and Nevis gained independence on September 19, 1983.
Every year, the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis celebrate Independence Day on #September 19. Various celebrations take place across the islands on this day, including a cultural program of dance, live music, local food, and traditional displays.
