I discovered the most amazing mural on the side of my old building where I used to live in Collingwood! We had to stop and take some pics, I had to share it because it is apparently the biggest mural in the Southern Hemisphere and it's some of the faces of people who live there. This thing is 20 stories tall!!! Isn't that cool? 😎

The rooftop structure will challenge the rigidity of the existing modernist form and provide public housing residents and the outer community with flexible leisure space to call their own. The space can operate as a skate ramp, BMX track, cinema, viewing deck and event space. • • •

North Richmond Social provides a socio-spatial critique of Le Corubsier’s high-rise public housing typology. The project is grounded in a historical and theoretical investigation of the relationship between humanism, modernism and public housing. It postulates that modernism (particularly the high-rise typology) showcases the shortcomings of humanist utopian agendas which fail to consider the complexities of human experience and inter-human dynamics, particularly those pertaining to power. This heavily program-centric intervention sees the activation of underutilised areas through the inclusion of a market and community centre, the unification of residents with the wider community through a porous edge condition and the manipulation of rigid modernist structures which will serve rather than dictate program. Though the juxtaposition of architectural and programmatic interventions, this project draws into question architecture’s capacity to improve socio-spatial polarisation and hopes to set a new social-centric agenda for public housing in Victoria.

One of my favorite street artists!! @adnate finally found it today. The tallest art work in the Southern hemisphere! Truly amazing and if you can go, go see it. The photos don't do it justice. It's so massive! 😲🙄 These 4 people depicted on the building are residents of the commission housing. ☺

Started at the bottom...in this little double red brick housing commission home began my future. Never, ever forget where you came from. My mother, so brave and strong and resilient, raised us herself. In the 90s, a time when Asians were at the forefront of everyday racism, she stood tall. Forged a life for us. She showed me what it was to be a strong woman and to never let anyone drag you down or scare you into silence. We never talk about our life here...but yesterday as I stood with my older sister and reflected on this place...it hit me. How far we had come, what we have achieved and what is still to come. Mum, I'm so grateful for you. I wouldn't be the woman I am today if it wasn't for you showing me the way.

The Reddies - The Carlton Red Flats

The Reddies used to be considered the best high rise public housing flats in Melbourne. Not only becuase of their location, Carlton, which is in close proximity not only to the city, but also the the entertainment hub that is Brunswick St, but also because they are 2 of only 3 high rise housing commission flats that have balconies (the only other one that I know of is in South Melbourne but only has 12 stories) with million dollar views. What added to their reputation was the way they used to be kept inside. You were greeted to weekly polished floors in closed hallways, unlike the other public housing flats that all have open air hallways on each floor. Tennants used to look after the inside of their homes as if they owned them. Unfortunately they've lost their reputation in recent years mainly due to people moving on in life in more ways than one, with heavy drug use and new inconsiderate tennants moving in.

In 1974, Tao Gofers started working for the NSW Housing Commission and the following year he designed, The Laurels in Sans Souci, which would be the prototype for the famous Sirius Building in the Rocks. The Laurels were a series of interlocking modular concrete cells in the Brutalist architectural style and interestingly it was based on Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67 in Montreal, which is an incredible architectural masterpiece, more kiddie’s outdoor play set than housing. It’s a great experience to walk through the courtyard of The Laurels and spot the similarities between this building and the Sirius Building, which was a housing commission structure as well. The coloured planter boxes are there, the pre-fabricated concrete walls, even the house numbers are the same font in amongst the boxes collected on top of each other like a children’s game. This is such discrete history, hiding so quietly between leafy trees and suburban fences. #taogofers #housingcommission #thelaurels #sansouci #brutalist #brutalistarchitecture #sydneyarchitecture #habitat67 #siriusbuilding #saveoursirius #architecturehistory

1990. Michael Benger reckons Williamstown "isn't such a bad place". The 18-year-old has lived in the bayside suburb for the past three years with his mother and 10-year-old sister.
A 10-minute drive from the city, his home is a flat in a 12-storey building with panoramic views of Port Phillip Bay.
The flat is one of 108 in "Nelson Heights", a Ministry of Housing building which could soon be for sale if suggestions in a preliminary report to be presented to the State Government in late July are acted on.
The secretary of the Williamstown Tenants' Association, Mrs Mabs Teese, said she had been inundated with calls from residents worried that they would lose their homes.
"People are very uneasy and there is no way, even under the first-home buyers' scheme, that they would be able to get a deposit together and take on the burden of home ownership," she said.
She said the association was also concerned about the fate of "deinstitutionalised residents" living in Nelson Heights.
"The community supports them in lots of ways and there is no way they could buy their flats," she said.
Local real estate agents agreed that the site was one of the most valuable in Williamstown but said the building would require considerable refurbishment.
If the units were sold separately under strata title, agents' price estimates range from $50,000 to $100,000.
A real estate agent, Mr John Williams, said a flat with a view could command as much as $100,000, but without one it would be difficult to get $50,000 or $60,000.
He said a reasonable estimate for the building if it were sold as an entire package would be $4.5-$5 million. [The Herald]

In 2004 Big hART began working with another isolated community- the Department of Housing’s notorious Northcott public housing Estate in Surry Hills. With a reputation for violence, murder and dysfunction, the community needed to find a new narrative. @sydney_festival included ‘Stickybricks’ in their 2006 program, and each night festival audiences were greeted by residents and joined a communal meal amongst the gardens with a performance incorporating light, projection, music, portraiture and movement highlighting the residents and their stories in a new and inclusive way. 🍃Photo by Keith Saunders

So proud of our Housing Commission for a great event- we are engaging the student body to talk about real life issues that affect their success and wellness and Housing affordability and insecurity is one of them.
Great job Cassius Rutherford and our interns.
