I don’t think most people know this about catch and release. Please repost to increase awareness and education.
Repost from @nakaweproject using @RepostRegramApp - A few days ago, a man sportfishing along the Padre Island National Seashore (Texas, USA) caught a 14 ft. (4.3 meter) hammerhead shark. The fisherman called it a catch of multiple lifetimes - but he also said the catch was incredibly saddening for him. He stated that his main goal was actually to release the shark safely back into the sea after posing for photos without removing the shark from the water. However, after the more than 1 hr. fight during the catch, the shark died. Is this really that surprising though?
.
Sportfishing is a popular activity for many people in the world, and the goal is to safely release the fish back after the catch. However, the fish do not know this is a sport. They are not in on the game. They are fighting for their lives. It is instinctual. So .. is it worth it? .
Very few fish do well after being released, and most fishes actually do not survive catch and release. Fish expend all of their energy to survive, and are generally not able to replenish their energy quickly enough after being caught to survive. Some fishes are extra sensitive to stress - like this hammerhead. Honestly, to most shark scientists and conservationists, it is no surprise this giant, beautiful hammerhead didn't survive. Hammerhead sharks cannot handle stress and usually die within 30 min. of being caught. .
So we bring you the question - how can we make sportfishing more sustainable? We are driven by education and actually work closely with fishermen throughout the world - but we do not have all the answers. Scientists are working hard to determine which species are most capable for sportfishing, but how do we connect with these fishermen more effectively? How do we prevent catching more sensitive species? We are not attacking sportfishermen, we are here to work with them. We are always listening. .

Endangered shark dies for a selfie... We were incredibly sad to hear about the death of a hammerhead shark off the coast of Texas, USA. Apparently the angler stated he wanted to release the shark alive, however, he fought with this incredibly vulnerable species of shark for an hour before dragging it onto the beach to pose for photos. The shark didn't stand a chance. Hammerheads are widely known to suffer great stress from being caught. Anglers who spot a hammerhead on their line should release it immediately to save it suffering from stress and the possibility of death.

We are always listening. . A few days ago, a man sportfishing along the Padre Island National Seashore (Texas, USA) caught a 14 ft.
Hammerhead sharks cannot handle stress and usually die within 30 min. of being caught. .

I just finished up my last dives on the Galápagos Islands and it was such a incredible time. Yesterday was an absolute mind blowing day for me. It was my first experience with sharks outside of a cage, and let me tell ya, my mind was racing the night before the dive. I was so nervous, yet extremely excited, trying to push back all of my fears... because for those of you that know me well, you’ll know that yesterday was a big milestone for me, and that if you would have told me 5 years ago I’d be swimming with Hammerheads in Hawaii, I would have laughed in your face 😅 I’ve always had a fear of sharks, and being in the “deep blue,” so a few years ago I set out on a journey to push myself out of my comfort zone and start facing these fears when I learned to scuba with @catharinaback in Malaysia. It has been one hell of a ride, and scuba diving has definitely set me free in many ways I cannot describe. It has unlocked a passion that grows within me every day. Sharks are definitely misunderstood, I cannot wait to get back in the water and spend more time with these beautiful creatures 🦈 So cheers to facing fears, no matter how big or little they may seem 🤙🏼
