Exoplaneten des Sterns HR 8799 gefilmt!
Der Film zeigt die Bewegung von 4 Exoplaneten um den 129 Lichtjahre entfernten Stern HR 8799 im Sternbild Pegasus. Er wurde von Astronomen eines interdisziplinären Wissenschaftler-Netzwerkes zur Erforschung on Exoplaneten (NExSS, Nexus for Exoplanets System Science) aus Aufnahmen des Keck-Teleskops in Hawai über 7 Jahre zusammengestellt. Der Stern selbst wurde ausgeblendet, da er ansonsten die vergleichsweise kleinen und lichtschwachen Planeten total überstrahlt hätte. Der innerste der hier sichtbaren Exoplaneten benötigt für einen Umlauf 40 Jahre, der äußerste 400 Jahre. Alle 4 Planeten sind jupiterähnlch aber massereicher. Es könnte näher am Stern noch weitere, unentdeckte Planeten geben. 
Der Film könnte zu einem Meilenstein in der Astronomiegeschichte werden, so ähnlich wie die Entdeckung der vier großen Jupitermonde durch Galileo Galilei am Beginn des 17.Jahrhunderts. Als er die Bewegungen der Monde um Jupiter durch sein kleines, selbstgebautes Teleskop beobachtete, erschien das wie ein verkleinertes Abbild unseres Sonnensystems mit der Sonne, um die sich alle Planeten in unterschiedlichen Abständen bewegten. Das damals noch revolutionär neue heliozentrische Modell wurde auf einmal anschaulich erfahrbar.
