Thought id be able to hold out longer before I showcased these guys but I just cant wait so here we are SQUATS straightaway in week 1.
From page 52 of the Blue Citadel Catalogue (Section One) this is the Squat command squad models by the Perry brothers.
Back in the late 80s when these figures were first cast, Warhammer 40,000 (or Rogue Trader as it was then of course) was still using many concepts carried over from Warhammer Fantasy (3rd ed at the time) thus alot of the early armies had figures named and tab stamped as "Standard Bearer", "Musician" & "Champion" which as we all know were the component parts of a warhammer unit/regiment command section.
The Standard is unashamedly Roman-esque in its design as was anything tied to the early concept of the 'Imperium' of Man.
The Musicians from different races got different instruments and someone somewhere decided Squats would use....."Synthesizers?!!". I remember thinking they looked weird back then and they still look weird now.
The Squat Officers and Champions (still not really sure what the difference is except maybe for that officer carried with it the idea of rank as opposed to champion which normally came with an increase in stat line and points but not neccessarily rank?) are all kitted out with gear common to the armies of the Imperium, power weapons, chainswords & las weapons.
The discussion of whether squats will ever return is still being had, and the excitement over having one introduced as a Necromunda Bounty Hunter recently only fuelled the debate.
I for one would love to see them back on the tabletop, for an oldschool player like me they are an Iconic part of the 40k universe.
