December brings long lines, impatience, and agitation. Holiday cheer quickly disappears when you spot those lengthy out-the-door lines and seemingly unbearable traffic jams. Of course it's difficult for some to fight anxiety when we're in a hurry to get somewhere, but it helps for me to think, "I'm going to get there when I get there." There's something soothing about knowing it's out of my control, and that there's no point in trying to make risky maneuvers about the sleek roads. Everyone is doing their best to get somewhere at a reasonable time.
Pay attention to the whole experience of the wait. If you're agitated, where are you feeling it in your body? Impatience tends to be a very mental, overwhelming feeling that pulls you up into your head. Try instead to be mindful of your body. Notice your breathing and your feet firmly on the ground. Bring yourself back down to your body. Then ask yourself, "Why am I feeling this way?" Sometimes you'll come to the conclusion that there isn't a clear reason and other times you may be reacting to someone else's hostility or annoyance. If it's the latter, remember that the stranger's perceived aggression has nothing to do with you. It couldn't possibly - they don't know you. Their overreaction is not about you, but about a need of theirs that isn't being met.
If you're feeling agitated and irritable, it might be something else entirely unrelated. Check in with yourself and make sure that you resolve any pent up anger so you can feel relaxed and calm out in the world. It's amazing what releasing these heavy thoughts and emotions can do.
What is something you do or tell yourself to soothe your irritability? All tips and tricks are welcome. #mindfulness
