What easier and more pleasurable way to travel the world than with coffee? 🌍🌎 Finished an excellent pack of Ethiopia Solomo from Verve Roasters in San Francisco, and starting a Brazilian Capadócia from P14 in the Zürich area. Fairly crazy tasting notes (peanut, lime, milk chocolate, blackberry, grapefruit, rhubarb - no, I didn't buy it just for the last one!). Beans smell amazingly like milk chocolate with orange, hint of creaminess. Aroma of orange and spice with lots of cane sugar sweetness. Taste is surprisingly robust, dry, astringent with aftertaste of orange and nuts. (Takes me back to the chocolate tasting course when I finally identified a taste as "nut skin".) *
In episode 18 of Brew & Review, Mike and I drink the last of our gifted Tim Wendelboe subscription. thank you, Jon, so much for your kindness to us. It’s been great drinking coffee from a legend.
For both of these coffees, we used the Clever Dripper to brew them. I drank them the next day, and got a better result with the Hario V60. That’s the method I would recommend for both of these coffees:
The varietals listed were SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11 and Batian. It was harvested in November, 2017. A washed coffee from Nyeri, Kenya, the flavor notes listed were:
• Black currants
I really liked how this coffee tasted, even with the Clever Dripper. However, since our recording, I’ve enjoyed it even more on the Hario V60.
A certified organic coffee by Debio, this was a washed Ethiopian Heirloom from Dalle, Sidamo. With a December, 2017 harvest, the flavor notes given were:
I didn’t like this coffee much, and I think it’s because of the brew method. It was much better on the Hario V60. That’s how I’ve drank it since.

The inside of the coffee shop is filled with bright colors and has a hole-in-the-wall feel. Royal Coffee & Tea focuses on Ethiopian coffee (arguably the initial birth place of coffee), a menu of comfort food, and a lot of sweets. This is a mom-and-pop shop that has been in the Rogers Park neighborhood for decades. They are also a proud partner with the Howard Area Community Center and hire the young persons from the center to improve their life skillsets. At any point in time, the owners also talk to the diverse patrons who frequent the shop.
Greetings Rastas and good morning #friday vibes. Been a great week and it’s going to be an amazing weekend. Treat yourself to an “Up Rise” Coffee. No better way to start the day. So happy to see the Mormora from Ethiopia roasted by @squaremilecoffee back. When brewed as a V60 @rubiaceaecoffee, it's bursting with Strawberry and dark chocolate, so so delicious 😋. It's great to be able to taste this coffee every year and see how it improves.
