Characterised by transparent washes of pigment and a jewel-tone palette, Peyton’s works address notions of idolatry and obsession. “A painting of a person can be descriptive, but for me it's about all the things that make up a picture—the feelings, the brushstrokes—more than describing somebody,” she has said. Notable figures she has painted include Kurt Cobain, Barack Obama, and David Bowie. Born in 1965 in Danbury, CT, Peyton went on to study at the School of Visual Arts. In 1993, she held a solo show of drawings in room 828 of the historic Chelsea Hotel, launching her career in the art world. #elizabethpeyton#artgirlrising#artwatchers#womenforwomen#5womenartists#michelleobama Via @artnet

Elizabeth Peyton, born 1965, is an American painter, photographer and multimedia artist. She is renowned as a portraitist of famous figures from the world of entertainment, literature and history. Peyton's portraits of rock stars and other celebrities have made her one of the most-talked-about American artists of her generation. She has been hailed as one of the painters who brought figurative art, that which uses the human figure as its subject matter, back into fashion after a long absence. The figures depicted are often elongated, slender, almost androgynous, and thus sexually ambiguous. They are usually involved in some kind of melancholic activity – sleeping, sitting or daydreaming. Peyton acknowledged the importance of photography as an inspiration source to her art. She paints from published editorial photographs, both old and recent, or from her own private collection of snapshots. Her work is most often executed in oil paint, applied with washy glazes that are sometimes allowed or encouraged to drip. She is a brilliant colorist with a razor-sharp graphic sense, her paintings are enormously seductive in form and content, celebrating the aesthetics of youth, fame, and creative genius. The idealization and stylization of known celebrities has led some critics to characterize her work as derivative of or in the tradition of Andy Warhol with a Romantic overtone. Like Warhol, Peyton’s art is at the service of the culture it captures. The selection of models or the way they are being represented may lead to her work being interpreted in regards to feminist and gender theory. Her ideal of male beauty is a conspicuously feminized one, exemplified in this portrait of a young Al Gore, nearly unrecognizable with his pale, delicately chiseled face, deep blue eyes and ruby lips. #elizabethpeyton
