We all know the feeling: Shortly after that #latté , nature calls. But does coffee really make you #poop ?
We’ve all been told that coffee — specifically, the #caffeine in #coffee — is a mild diuretic, which means that it makes the body excrete more liquid than normal (read: pee more). The diuretic effects of caffeine can vary based on many factors, including your sex, activity levels and whether or not you’re used to its effects. But caffeine can also have a laxative effect in some particularly sensitive people. The chemical stimulates muscle contractions in the large intestines, which are similar to the contractions that happen after you eat a meal.
The acidic nature of coffee also causes an increase in the production of bile #acids in the body, said DePaolo. The #liver makes bile and stores it in the gall #bladder , and coffee can make the gall bladder release the bile into the intestines, causing #diarrhea as well.
The artificial sweeteners in coffee mixes can cause bloating, gas and diarrhea. Dairy products like #milk , #cream and half-and-half contain a #sugar called lactose, which can trigger diarrhea and other gastrointestinal complaints among people who are lactose intolerant. Even among those who are not intolerant, the ability to digest lactose tends to decline with age.
Taken together, it’s amazing that this witches brew of poop-producing #ingredients doesn’t send everyone running to a bathroom after a couple of cups.
So how much is too much? More than two or three cups of coffee can cause diarrhea in some, according to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.
The average #American consumes about 200 milligrams of caffeine a day (the amount in about two servings of coffee), and chances are that they have figured out just how much coffee they need to walk the line between diarrhea and a regular, #healthy poop. --

My name is Shana Dubow Lehrmann (this name gives you my author page on Facebook, not my profile page). I have had chronic symptoms since I was a little kid, but it took decades to diagnose my multiple conditions. The problem with juvenile onset of #invisiblediseases is that kids don’t know what’s normal for their bodies, so they don’t think to talk about most of their symptoms until they get so bad they can’t bear them or become noticeable to the adults around them. And sometimes when we did talk about them early, adults would think we were faking to get out of something we didn’t want to do, and then tell us we were “too young to have that problem,” or “it must not be that bad” since we weren’t screaming, or if we cried a lot, that they couldn’t see anything wrong with us, so we better stop crying or they would “give us something to cry about.” I don’t know exactly what age I was when the symptoms started. I remember: I had trouble getting to sleep; I couldn’t play in the rare snow we got in Atlanta for more than a few minutes before my hands and feet hurt; my mother would try to be very careful brushing the tangles out of my long hair, but I would still cry every time, until when I was six she had my hair cut short and my head felt so much better; I got #migraines ; I would feel dizzy when I stood up or when seeing strobe lights. I was clumsier than other kids, got sick more often, more severely, and more prolonged than they did. I even had the early stages of the rare disease #ReyesSyndrome twice, before they figured out what it was and that aspirin could cause it; the only thing that saved me from later stages and possibly death was heavy hour-long nose bleeds at least once every day for more than a week.

Certain sugar polyols can have nasty effects on the gut. They definitely aren’t my friends 🙁If you’ve ever had one too many sugar-free cough drops or gum or even fruit like a nectarine, pear or peach, prunes or too much guacamole 🥑and have experienced ‘laxative’ effects (hellooooo where’s the loo?!), it might’ve been the FODMAPs, Polyols. So how can they cause gut symptoms?
1) More water can be pulled into the gut, which can mean diarrhea as 💩 becomes more liquid or soft.

C. difficile is a gram (+) spore-forming anaerobic bacillus. Risk factors for infection: use of broad spectrum antibiotics (fluoroquinolone, cephalosporins and clindamycin), hospitalisation and acid suppression therapy (H2 antagonists/PPi’s). Transmission is via the feaco-oral route, the spores are heat resistant and can remain dormant in the environment for long periods. New onset diarrhoea, more than 3 partially formed per 24-hour period (Bristol 5-7), distinctive foul odour, recent antibiotic use, abdominal pain and fever are suspicious for C-dif especially in a hospital sized patient. This infection can be diagnosed br ELISA for the A/B toxins, prior to these tests diagnosis was made by sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy which revealed the finding of pseudomembranes. Treatment is with antibiotics such as vancomycin or metronidazole and giving fluids to replace any losses in the stool. In addition rigorous infections should be set in place to minimise the spread of infection.
08/15 - Topaz has been panic about my absence of these two days..he has probably diagnosed the SAD(separation anxiety disorder), and started having serious diarrhea since the first day I left. Activated Charcoal For Dog Tummy Troubles?
It seems like lately that I’ve been talking about Rex, our farm dog. He is a pretty amazing eight almost nine year old dog. In his prime, he could run up to 40 mph along the side of our ranger. He would run for miles racing us to the next field. As you probably figured out, he survived the tornado on our family farm. Still to this day, we are bewildered on how he survived without a scratch. While the farm was being rebuilt, Rex would spend his days at the farm eating and chewing on God knows what and then he would sleep in our house at night. Whatever he ate would cause him tummy troubles. There were quite a few nights where we thought that he was dying by his body shakes, tremors, and limp body. Then we would rush off to the Vet the next morning where Rex would then be fine. I realized during those episodes that Rex must have consumed something he shouldn’t have at the farm. Out of complete desperation, I gave him an activated charcoal pill in some cheese. Yes, even feeling sick Rex would still muster up the energy to consume cheese. Activated charcoal has been used for centuries to help with accidental poisonings, removal of toxins, diarrhea and even with overconsumption of alcohol in humans. Activated charcoal is an alternative treatment used to absorb or soak up unwanted toxins and then the body flushes out the activated charcoal with those toxins. Activated charcoal is made from porous coconut shells. It contains small chambers that “capture” the unwanted material in the body. I have used the Nature’s Way Activated Charcoal on myself when I’ve had food positioning, detoxing, and sometimes when I’ve had the flu. Thus, I would give Rex (100 lbs) one capsule of activated charcoal every four hours while he was sick. Please note that the best solution if your pet is feeling ill is to take them to the vet immediately.
