Congrats to Luis Herrera and the Negrete boys! This year was the 51st Baja 1000 race, and they took the first place finish for the 5-1600 class! A year ago, I went to Mexico to film a documentary on the wild attempt at a friend and his buddies to race in the 5-1600 class (modified VW Bug) of the 50th anniversary of the Baja 1000 off-road race in the Mexican Baja Peninsula. The Herreras and the Negrete boys were a part of our race team and pit crews. The night before the race, it was decided there weren’t enough people to race in the car during the 48 hour 1000+ mile race, and I volunteered to co-pilot for the legendary Victor Herrera for 200 miles of the race. Aside from being potentially the most reckless thing I’ve ever thrown myself into (on account of never having sat in the car before race day and having no time to work out a communication strategy with Victor), it ended up being one of the most incredible experiences of my life. The camaraderie of the racers and teams, the danger and unforgiving apathy of the desert, the incessantly turbulent ride, the imminence of calamity and necessity of action and problem solving all led to oversights that caused me to be abandoned by the race team in Bahía de Los Ángeles to spend the day getting drunk on a private beach with a race legend, the best tacos I’ve ever had, and a lengthy drive to a short flight from Tijuana, all to trek back up the peninsula from La Paz to San Francisco.

We just came out from spending 3 nights in the Sahara Desert and it was beautiful and so surreal. I kept saying to Jonathan "We're in the Sahara Desert! We're walking through the Sahara! Like THE Sahara. This is crazy." We hadn't originally planned on going to the Sahara Desert.... like ever in our lives, but when I researched things to do in Morocco, it suddenly became the #1 thing to do. And it's truly a beautiful place.
Be ready for an onslaught of desert photos.
