This record, now in heavy rotation at my house, is a real horror show. For reasons never explained, the TV cameras filming Howdy Doody for years are mysteriously sentient. They reveal this secret to Buffalo Bob by instantaneously disappearing the peanut gallery kids. 🤔?The cameras will only return the kidnapped kids if Buffalo Bob tells the story of how he met Howdy Doody. The grotesque characters have a lowkey sinister vibe, with their distorted features and hyperactive obsessions.
Recorded in 1974 (14 years after the last Doody TV episode aired), this record pines for the show’s heyday while fetishizing Buffalo Bob’s pioneer roots. If this were a TED talk I’d link the dark American nostalgia of this album and its hostage children to current events - but really the pics speak for themselves. Another kids’ LP that seemed wholesome at the record store but is nightmare-inducing after 45,000 repeat plays by my children.
