big bend :: infinite piano
Whenever I get the chance to go hiking in Big Bend, I can’t stop thinking of the 1st Chorus of "Desolation Blues." Especially the line that says: "...the world is hanging
Into an ocean of endless space
The mountains dripping rock by rock
Like bubbles in the void"
I find it difficult to bring a camera places because I worry it will be a burden that detracts from being in the moment. I'm learning that it is worth the effort and time to try to capture something special and frame it in a unique space. As a unique moment. In a unique timeline.

My second time here and I saw completely different scenery than the last time I was here. It was all desert before. This time we saw desert, mountains, forest, creeks, it was incredible. #bigbendnationalpark#backpacking#chisosbasin
There were so many cool moments, but here are a few.. @ochterbeck thank you so much for allowing me to go with you. You are a freak of nature, an All American Hi-Pointer, and an amazing Pastor!! Respect the mess out of you, brother.
@natesenor- homie, you slept the first night the cold ground.. you’re me hero! Thank you for being so solid on this trip!! You killed it bro! Nate is the real deal, y’all!!
Love you guys! The Guad put up a good fight, but it ain’t got nothing on us.
Packed only about half of the way to Emory Peak and dumped our packs at our little campsite (Boulder Meadow 5). Then got to go to the summit with only a little Day pack 😍 #chisosbasin#backpacking#getoutside
What's your go-to footwear for hiking? And what do you typically eat for breakfast while camping?
This was day 3... We ate our breakfast alongside with Summer Moon Velvet Blaze coffee to get us going (I had oatmeal and a PB&J with rye bread 🤔, my friends had oatmeal as well with a side of ramen 😆.) then we set off to Emory Peak, 7825' elevation, which was about a 10mi hike roundtrip to end with a 2500' elevation gain from Chisos Basin. .
#Chacos handled the trail superbly. They've been my go to since 2016, when I first tried them out and fell in love.
On out first night we attempted Lost Mine but a storm came though and we had to run 1/2 way back down in the rain and hail!! Pelting us- drenching us, and shooing us over to the Basin. Sopping wet we watched the sunset and then heard a roar- behind us a giant cloud was oozing over the mountains- a thick, liquid looking mass that entered with a roar of the wind moving it fast, sprawling, catching the sunset- one of the most awe inspiring things I’ve ever seen. How fortunate to be at the right place at the right time. @bigbendnps
After driving through an unexpected hail storm in desolate west texas, we arrived at camp after midnight and set up our tents in the darkness, unaware of our surroundings. When we groggily rolled out of our tents in the morning, this view greeted us. Nature is full of surprises.

We kicked off fall break with a 14 hour drive to southern Texas. We arrived just before sunset and managed to hike out to the Windows before we lost the light, then watched the stars put on a brilliant show. The next day we hiked to a hot springs on the Rio Grande, and then made our way to the other side of the park, where we waded across Terilingua Creek and then hiked into the Santa Elena Canyon. We saw bears gorging themselves for winter, tarantulas crossing the roads and scouted the campground so next time we can take #biggythebigegg with us and stay longer. #darkskypark#bigbendnationalpark#findyourpark#nationalparks#hiking#chisosmountains#chisosbasin#quicktrip#fallbreak#keepexploring
